I have one of the Butt Fenders - they are very good ... at keeping the underside of your saddle clean, but not much more than that.. I guess if you're in the saddle all the time, then they may work a bit. I've also just put a neoguard on the front so I'll see how that goes - I have heard the stories about crud around the fork seals, which the Bender Fender should actually stop. I've got one of those to try as well!

So I was out at the weekend over Thorndon, very wet and as soon as I got some speed up, crap was getting in my face and eyes causing me to slow down as I couldnt see anything. So my question is would you go for a bender fender/Neo guard or spend the money on some clear lensed glasses.

Neo guard is pretty good, still get a dirty face but to be honest I think that's more from the bike in front!. I'll leave it on for now though.
As for glasses, I ALWAYS wear them, especially in the forest. There's more than a bit of flying muck to worry about, especially at this time of year. I've been whipped in the face a few times by stray branches, etc especially if you're riding close to the guy in front and he pushes something out of the way as he goes through!

So I picked up a Bender Fender last week, I figured that at £6 it was worth a go.

I found it was OK, at higher speeds it did not work at all, it was nowhere near as good as the Neoguard which pretty much stops all mud hitting my face.

I've stuck the Bender Fender on the Missus' bike instead as she doesn't go fast anywhere!

Thanks for all the responses. It seems then that the choice is glasses or a neo guard. Trying to keep costs down, so in a perfect world I want to be able to choose one or the other.

One other comment re: glasses ....

When I "face-planted" at the bottom of a bomb-hole a few years ago, I ruined my helmet (cracked) and also fractured my left eye socket ( it was a skull fracture, but it was actually my left eye socket), anyway I honestly believe that if I hadn't been wearing glasses, I might have lost my eye, or at least damaged it badly, the front of my glasses were completely scratched up. having said that, I wasn't wearing a full face helmet ... but then, If I had been , I might have damaged my neck ... I hit the ground pretty hard. That's the main reason I always wear glasses!

Ouch, well I understand then why you wear glasses, and for the sake of a few quid off e-bay, it has to be worth it....

Thanks Wonkle. Shoes are a definite must. For the last couple of rides I have been wearing astro-turf football trainers and these seem to be working well.

Question regarding the Neo Guard, how do I know what size to get. I have SR XCT MLO 100 forks.

The neoguard website has recommended sizes for the most common forks and fork travel

I saw lots of Marsh Guards being used in Morzine (I think they are made there ?), had good reviews in mags too, you can get em for £6.99 from Dirty Girls site > http://www.dirtygirlsride.com/Dirty_Gir ... guard.html.

I also notice that if you subscribe to DIRT mag you get a free T-Shirt and free Dirt fender . http://dirt.mpora.com/news/subscribe-to ... ender.html
