Raced the ews last weekend, quite a few people riding without backpacks, just water bottle and tubes/c02 cannisters taped to the frame. Must be a lot easier to ride.

Banana or 2
Spare Top & Gloves

I ride with an Osprey Viper 9L with the following in it;

- Spare tube
- Tyre patches
- Tube patches
- Multitool (inc. chain splitter)
- Tyre levers
- 15mm Spanner
- Pump
- 3 Way wrench
- Spare brake pads
- 2 spare chain links
- 2.5" Knife (kept sharp)
- £10
- 3 or 4 gels
- 1.5 to 3L water
- First Aid Kit (Very well stocked)
- Antiseptic wipes (always appreciated after hitting nettles...)
- Spare much hanger

hmm, yep, I think that's about it...

^ unless it's a steely like my hardtail a spare mech hanger would have been a quicker and better solution :)

My first aid kit has a medium field dressing kit on top. I had 48 from the district nurse after my op last year and these have a dressing,gloves antiseptic solution, clean area sheet thing to prep all the stuff on, medical gauze.
They are designed for 8" wounds but you never know :)

Copy of 1886 Map
2 Snickers Bars, Malt Loaf, Water

and tools as above..
and derailleur bottom cog spindle is a useful bag throw in if you are out with a large group

Normally take bottle of water and Saddle bag with spare inner tube, multitool, c02 cannister/pump allen key and chain link.
