I came out on that big group ride at epping on 22nd , as i was riding along i noticed that when we hit the bumps/roots my chain seemed to be crashing around more than others far more noisy!
anything to worry about or just the way it is?
it didnt cause any gear jumping just very noisy!
riding rockhopper expert hardtail. :?:

You will need oneof these to wrap around your frame by the chain to get rid of slap.

Or use a piece of old inner tube far cheaper and better.. Either wrap it around or as I did just cut a slice and then cable tie it.. Job done..

You could also consider a rear mech with a clutch mechanism like Shimano's shadow plus to help prevent chain slap.

As far as I know they're only 10 speed. XT and SLX now have them along with XTR, Saint and the new Zee group. SRAM are also doing them but not sure what groups or speeds they are doing them in but I think it will be only 10 and 11 speed.

Theres a video somewhere showing an old derailuer compared to the new Shadow + system, it does look very good and gets rid of a lot of chain slapping about, its a lot more than you think, I find that in very rough conditions I have my full face on so dont hear it as much but notice it more when only wearing trial lid.

Im tempted to get the new Saint (or maybe Zee) version but of course its a lot of expense as you need to change the cassette and shfter (to goto 10 speed).

I noticed that the guy in front and guy behind had far less noise when hitting roots and logs!
i will let you know if the chainstay guard helps!

Out of interest do full suspension bikes have less chain slap than hardtails over rooty sections?

Its worth checking your chain length

put the bike in the largest front and rear gears and then look at the angle of the derailleur.

it should be stretched forward but not locked out.

if it is vertical or near to then you can take a couple of links out

The smaller front chain ring you are on, the more chain slap you will get because the chain is that much closer to the chainstays.

Depending on the size of your chain stays i have an unused cover (proper one with velcro along it) you can have for the cost of postage and a pint !

It doesn't matter what you ride
