Agree with Jon - looks shiney but think you would be going from heavy freeride rig to heavy freeride rig. Thought you wanted something more nimble and lighter?

Yer, i think its a little large for what i am after.

very hard to get the balance right though, short of shelling out on a nicolai custom!

nomad is still high on the list.

SX trail mate, although a coil nomad with totems would be a DH slayer

Hey ive got a furious and i love it. depends what youve got planned for it though. It pedals but thats it, anything that looks like half a hill is just f=3cking hard work. Show it even a gental slope or get it in the air and it just feels incredable. For me its got the pefect ballance of being chukable and loving jumps and slack enough to run downhill. You wont be the fastest but you can throw it arround as hard as you like and itll take it and just leave you grinning like the village idiot.

Nice review ggg!

will have to test ride one after all! think i will need something closer to all mountain though but we will see, it does come in under 40 pounds.

Yer its not light i have no idea how much 40 pounds is, it just weighs what it weighs. My mate in spain put totem airs and a air rear shock on his which felt a lot lighter up front than my 66's. Im riding and digging over enfield on sunday if you want to have a ride.

Couple of people I ride with in the Peaks have SX Trails and they go up and down the steepest stuff no problems. Weigh in at 37lb ish.

If you're looking for something to pedal uphill as well as chuck downhill, I'd also recommend the SX trail. Mate of mine rides one and rides uphill like a xc racer, and is seriously fast downhill with it. That bike can take some hits.

In the search for a slack rig that can take hits, I'm currently riding this, which was a good option once you move away from the standard specialized set up until they discontinued it:

If I ever break/lose this, I'll probably get a SX trail.

Another mate just got a Yeti SB-66 which also looks like a good option, but pricey!

Tom - some other options and ideas below - you interested in full bike or frame only?

Orange Alpine 160
Banshee / Mythic Rune
Trek Scratch (I luv mine and have done all dayers on it in all-mountain mode at Afan as well at herts / woburn / fod etc in DH mode, as it's discontinued you may be able to find a good deal)
Trek Slash (2012 replacement for the scratch)
Giant Reign SX or X
Nox Flux FR(less expensive versions of Niccolai's built by guys who used to work at Nic)
Rose Beefcake SL
Canyon Torque
Ellsworth Moment

With all the above if you can afford it, think key to max versatility is having two sets of wheels - one lightweight set for all mountain with single ply tyres and one heavy duty for DH & FR with dual ply PLUS coil and air shock.
