OK

The final bike is in progress (Single speed cross country). Most of the parts I already have and am in the process of acquiring a Kinsesis Decade virsa frame for a decent price.

I need to buy brakes - can anyone recommend some lightweight good quality brakes that I could pick up on ebay for about £100-150 for the set.

Have Hopes so was thinking of something different, fancied avid but the reviews seem to not be great - moise and needing resetting etc.

Any other ideas?

Could get a pair of slx for around that price.

i am running saints on the dh bike and xt on the trail machine - both work the same way and are excellent and super easy to bleed with no nasty dot fluid.

slx are just a cheaper version and supposed to stack up well.

What are the brakes on the other bikes - if you go for similar ones you wont need different, pads, bleed kits, dot fluid, yada yada - so might be worth it.

SLX as Joel mentions or avid elixir 3 are both supposed to be very good of the new breed.

Apart form my running out of pad material  I have never had a problem with my juicy 7's.

Although they are my first disc brakes so havent really got anything to compare them too :)

SLX or XT's all day long, they just work.
Avoid the Avids, their supplied pads seem to be made from cheese as they wear super quick. They squeal like banshee's when wet too.

I just bought some Hayes strokers "http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/mountain-bike-disc-brakes/hayes-disc-brakes/hayes-stroker-ryde.html" And yes that price is for the pair!!
So far so good, and for the money cant go wrong really.

I also have a used pair of Juice 5's I am selling if your interested??

Can't judge the other brands but I run Juicy's on one bike and XT's on the other and I prefer the XT
my experience is that in very muddy conditions (think of Epping in the winter) the XT are less likely to keep sliding along the disc

Thanks chaps

I hadn't thought of XT or SLX but I love my Saints so think I will keep an eye out for Shimano
