The idea behind the Narrow/Wide chainring is the same as SRAM's X-Sync: alternating teeth are made extra-wide to more fully fill the gap between the side plates as the chain passes through. Meanwhile, all of the teeth are also a bit taller than usual to further prevent derailment." - taken from a race face review
Interestingly I was reading some stuff recently where people seem to think through their own testing that the chain-ring was the most important element in not having the chain come off rather than the clutch... ie they upgraded to clutches when they came out - still lost their chain - but less.... but then added the ring - no dropped chain. I suspect its the combo of the 2 which covers all the different chain derailment scenarios.
The chain does move about quite a bit even with a clutch
