I did the road ride last year and it was very nice, always well organized. I might do both days this year if I have some spare cash.

Bought my ticket a few weeks ago for the Saturday MTB....if you're going I suggest buying one ASAP as they tend to sell out a week or so before the ride.

Let me know if you want to meet up and ride together.

It'l be all on Fire Road Spence... they don't go off piste with these rides, so for a true Epping experience it would be better doing a guided ride through the finer parts the forest has to offer... and it'l be cheaper...

Yer i did it last year, if you have never done epping its a good start for a newbie. It was not all fire road (there was single track thrown in in the middle and end), there was tarmac and farmers fields as well lol. Its not techical but a good long ride if you are after a bit of mileage

I'm hardly a newbie, but my mate is and we're both doing the 30 mile ride, just for the hell of it really. He's worried about the distance, but I told him it'd be pretty tame as it's for all abilities. Only reason I'm doing it is to have a ride around Epping and see if I learn anything more about the area. We tend to ride what we know in Epping an usually end up doing a very similar route every time.

I would have done it too just for the sort of guided tour aspect.

do you have a garmin or similar to make a gpx file of the route?

I have "MapMyRide" running on my phone, but it's not always totally reliable - have to wait and see the results at the end of the ride. If I get a complete route, I'll publish it - apparently as mentioned earlier, it's fire roads, some cycle path and some single track - some short sharp climbs and some downhill - not really sure what to expect, but at least it's guided / signposted and could be a nice outing in summer if there are any pubs en-route!

@VonROOKe. They normally email out the route as GPX before the ride, I might also see if I can test a garmin edge again as it was really useful last time.

What kind of pace are you running at? Mind if I join you if the time suits and I can keep up?.....I've signed up for the medium route so far but the last muddy ride they did really sapped the strength!

I'm not expecting to be "racing" if that's what you mean - more than happy if you want to tag along.

I'm doing the Palace to Palace ride this Sunday (Buckingham Palace to Windsor Castle) - it's 45 miles and I'm doing it on the full susser with XC tyres !! ,because I can't be bothered to change them, then change them back. So I don't know what sort of state I'll be in for a 30 mile off-road 6 days later. As I mentioned, my mate is a newbie, only been riding since Feb when he bought a Scott Hardtail with some redundancy money ... 3 weeks ago he bought a full suss Norco Sight 2 - so what he lacks in experience is compensated by enthusiasm!!

You may find that you're waiting for me to keep up ha ha ha.

We'll be arriving in a Subaru estate with a rack on the back, My mate has the Norco, which is white with a bit of blue and blue DMRs and I have a Cube AMS125 Pro which is also mainly white, with black and yellowy green bits.

The more the merrier!!

Hi @VonROOKe

Not 100% sure I'll do the Epping ride yet, had a knee injury that keeps coming back after some mountain biking so might rest it this weekend....will keep you posted on Thursday/Friday if I'm thinking of doing the Epping ride.

Cheers

No worries.

I felt like I'd been kicked in the knee on Sunday eve after the palace to palace ride. Had a slow start due to a colleague insisting on having a conversation at the start line which continued from The Mall to Richmond Park!, I hadn't met her before (there were 103 entries from the company I work at, which has around 8000 UK employees) but I knew she was fairly senior, I felt compelled to wait for her to catch up everytime we went up a hill - despite the fact that she was on a road bike. She eventually pulled over in the park to phone her husband about something and I was able to power on. 45 miles - 3Hrs 31mins on a full suss with XC tyres, is reasonable I think. Surprising how many road bike riders get the hump when they are overtaken by an old bloke on a mountain bike!

Anyway, fortunately my knee and everything else was fine by Monday morning. I don't know the car reg as it's my mate's car - we'll be going whatever the weather so look out for us if you're there. We can make some proper meeting arrangements towards the end of the week if you decide to go for it. I'm on this forum at least twice a day so I should see any messages.
