Hi all, new to forum so go easy!!

I'm looking for some opinions on what tyres to run on going into autumn that would last me over the winter. I'm running on 27.5s, with tubes on a hard tail, mostly riding over Epping and a little bit of road in between trials etc. I'm not that savvy (yet) on the ins and outs of the specs when looking to buy online, being quite new to MTB. I'm really after a tyre that will grip well over the Forrest during the great British winter, but will roll quite well too for my little bit of road riding in between the dirt! A bit of an "all rounder" I suppose.

You're sort of asking for two different things really

A tyre that's good now and into the autumn won't be much good for the winter, especially in the mudfest that is Epping at that time of year.

For what it's worth this year I've run on my 27.5" hardtail

Started with the first combo and changed as it dried out....

Nobby Nick front Mountain King rear

Nobby Nick front Rocket Ron rear

Rocket Ron front Racing Ralph rear.... this is what's on now.

As it gets wetter and muddier I'll work my way back through the combinations to end up with probably Mountain King front and rear.

So if you want winter tyres now... Mountain King Protection. Good in the mud..... slow and draggy now


I'd just ignore the road bit.... doesn't really matter

Don't worry riding on road with nobbys you get use to it & it make you faster.

Thanks for the replies, was looking at the nobby Nics to start on as the weather changes and go from there with a bit of trial and error approach. Do you think it will be ok to run them on front and rear? I know it's a probaly personal prefrance thing, just wondered if anyone's had experience with them on front and rear, and would or wouldn't advise it.

I had them on both and did a lot of miles on road & woods

They don't like north shore slid out. Do they do them in your size? I've not looked.

Did go off them as had sidewalls start to split. Keep eye on that if running tubless.

Nobby Nics are a tyre you can run both ends, the latest version of the Nic is a bit more wet conditions orientated than past versions and a little more draggy on the tarmac.

I used MK's during this winter and they were fine, just kept the psi low 18 front 21rear, usually I'd put on Mud tyres for a wet winter.

I was thinking of going for a MK rear and a Trail King front, for a more aggressive front end.

Last winter just left high roller 2 on back and wtb vigilante upfront done the job. When it gets serious slop no one tyre will be great just run lower pressures.
But also have run nobbys too and same applies.

I've not as much experience as some guys on here, but I've run Hans Dampf front Nobby Nic rear in summer and Magic Mary front Dirty Dan rear winter slop time..

If you go for Schwalbe tires remember to go for a trailstar front pacestar rear tire set up for a grippy front, easy roll rear

Been running hans dampf front-trailstar/rear- pacestar combo for last 2 bikes & not bothering to swap them out as weather changes. Works for me .
