Hi

I have a Hollywood bike rack that has been fine for transporting 2 cheapo bikes, however I'm not to happy about my new pride and joy smashing about into my other bike

I have a Seat Altea and have been looking at roof bars and tow bars (I have a tow bar fitted)

Can anyone give any thoughts on these or make any suggestions, don't really want to spend a fortune

I did a search and read some previous threads but didn't seem to get a suitable answer

Thanks

Stephen

As you have a tow bar fitted I would say the tow ball option would be your best bet. The cheapest I could get one fitted was £400 and then we I change the car I will need to pay the same again.

For that reason I opted for the roof bars - Thule Aero bars and Thule Proride carrier.
You will need a foot pack, fixxing kit and bars. New its about £180. then the carriers which are about £90 each.

Ebay is good if you are not in to much of a hurry. It is possible to get some at good prices especially if you buy it all seperately but often they end up costing similar to brand new once you add the postage. I managed to get the bars for £30 and collected locally. The rest I got from halfords when they had a discount day as this ended up cheaper than online once you added in the postage

Cheapest place I found for the carrier was £125 for 2 from Mazda car parts online.

I have the tow ball mounted Thule rack on my 4x4... Fits real secure and current one I have is the two bike mount... Fits in seconds and had no issues with loose fitting or worry about bike coming off... The clamp for the mount is locked in place and then secured in place with a metal clip... Only thing is if these racks obscure your number plate or lights you need a light and number plate board....mine dose'nt :-)

I made mine up from bits and bobs off ebay, got the correct thule footpack for my car, used some old Halfords roof bars and bought a couple of older model thule bike racks that were tried and tested.

the only issue i have is that when your knackered, getting your bike up on the roof is a mission !!!

may need to remove the front wheel of one bike so to turn he handle bars out the way... Fits two easily then. Thought I may have needed to get the optional thule cross bar adapter when I got my full sus bike, but did not in the end as it fitted fine..

The rubber straps hold it really tight, and with a bunje strap as well stop the wheels spinning and secures through my spare wheel on the back....
