 Post subject: How to get pedals off

Right, bought a road bike (please don't judge me, I've still got the wilson) and swapped the chainset out for something a bit nicer, and now I'm looking to sell the old one. The only problem is the original owner has done the pedals up so tightly I can't get them to budge whatsoever.

I sprayed WD40 on them and left them overnight, and still nothing. My allen keys are bending, and a spanner won't budge them. The cranks are all rounded sides and polished finish which would make putting them in a vice tricky (trickier still as I don't have a vice). Any tips or tricks you guys could collectively suggest?!

Wrap an old inner tube around them and put them in a vice, put a long reach Allen key in the back and a spanner on the nut, pressure on the Allen key and bash the spanner with a hammer. Tricky if you don't have a vice

Can you not put them back on the bike ? would be easier to get them undone

Warm just the crank arms gently with a plumbers torch. As long as your carefull there should be no damage and the expansion should give you a better chance....

Where do you live? I've got acces to vice, plumbers torch and if needed BIG hammers (lol) at work to try and un screw it if needed

You'll def find it easier to get them off if they are on the bike (probably not what you want to hear now you have fitted the new crank :roll: ). Alternatively you need to use some body weight! Lay the crank on the ground (ideally wrapped in something to protect it - on grass or a bag of sand is better than the workshop floor) with the spanner pointing up at about 45degrees and stand on the end of it to squeeze the two together. If you had a vice you can use that to do the squeezing.

Right hand pedal removes anti-clockwise, left hand removes clockwise.

+1 Always worth remembering:

Pedal - Non Drive Side - reverse thread (so it tightens as you ride)
Bottom Bracket - Drive Side - reverse thread (so it doesn't tighten as you ride)

Cheers for all the advice team!

:lol: Just to clarify, I'm o.k with changing pedals normally, I know they go different ways :D. And there are handy arrows on them with "Tighten ->" so it's really hard to get wrong :lol: (but always good to check the simple things first!)

Warming them up sounds like a good call, but they've got a ridiculous shiny gloss finish and I might make a real mess of them.

I think i'll try to fashion a vice out of whatever I can find in the garage (cheers for the inner tube suggestion, definitely a good call), then I'll try putting them back on the bike, and if there's still no joy I'll probably getting in touch with one of your guys who offered the use of an actual vice! Cheers all :thumbup:
