Post subject: HELP! Disc Brakes - Improved Pad Performance Hints and Tips

Hi all,

I had heard a rumour about removing hydraulic disc pads, heating them up on the oven to burn the cr*p off of them, then let them cool naturally, refit, then they work brilliantly.... is this true??

what other tips do people have for better performance from disc brakes - besides the obvious bleeding them correctly etc??

for reference I am using hope mono mini M2 's front and rear - 200mm front / 160mm rear.

- Colin.

Only have cleaned pads with wet N dry papers, flat on table.

Heat up in oven

Buy original pads they always seem to last the longest
I have the original shimano sintered pads in my xt brakes owned them about a year now
Still got plenty left
Either I don't use my brakes much or they are very good pads

Dont heat them up in the oven for fecks sake! they are bonded to the metal with a type of glue that will melt!
just use clean pads on clean discs, set them up properly and they should work far better than you should ever need!

As above ^^^ use

Also use break disk cleaner when cleaning and keep any lubricating spray especially wd40 well away from the pads and disk's...

I agree with using cleaner on pads n rotors, and keeping them uncomtaminted, if they do get contaminated or if there is air on system they tend to get shiny n useless although sonetimes csn be saved with emery papet or ive used some carborundum grit paste with success. Ive found many local spots just dont have enough long steep runs to really wear/burn pads in especially harder metal/sintered ones whereas for example a single run in the alps would burn them in great :) . I recrntly went through 3 lots of pads and nearly my rotors too in 2 weeks, riding all day every day :)

That's the alps for you, it's mainly the steepness, length of runs that differs from uk,,,,it is quite possible to go through standard pads in a day. As for the rotors they are light ones with not much metal and I noticed that on the thinner/less metal section they were wearing concave and my pads were going convex !, although didn't seem to affect stopping ability.
