I was also happy with my Mountain King 2.2. VW yours were 2.4 right?
Still got prepared for worse conditions de Bontrager Mud x 1.9. Curious to compare performance to MKings as I'm now more regular rider in Epping

The Small Block 8's are meant to be ok by Kenda.

I was using Continental Vertical Pro's and have used them for a year or so and not really had issues in any conditions but they are a little drift happy in the wet.

Bonty Mud-X have always been superb in the mud at Epping and Thorndon. Mine are the 2.0's, and I never came off because of them loosing grip, it was always due to me loosing skills! Haha!
I must get the steed out again, though i'm woefully unfit nowadays!

Yes the bonty mud x are the dogs nuts and are my normal choice, but i must admit the 2.4 mountain king i used sunday was excellent and it saved me big time. off camber grip was there all the way, just got to get over the size of it. not sure i'll put one on the back tho.

No need, as long as the front end is gripping the back can do what it wants

How does one go about assessing what a rim will take with regards tryre size?

I did loads of looking around online for my ALEXRIMS RHD (standard Rockhopper round things) but couldn't find anything.

Went up to 2.25 Schwalbes from the 2.0 FastTracks which were, again, the standard ones on the bike.

Wondered how big I could go....

It's frame clearance that's normally the issue, although rim widths do have an affect on the tyre profile. The wider the rim the rounder the profile, thinner rims tend to create a taller tyre that can be prone to rolling due to the increased side load.

Why do you want wider tyres?
Is it for more grip, more comfort or looks?

Had just assumed that wider would result in more rubber and nobbly bits to provide more grip as the weather turns more and more 'Autumnal'..

Two schools of thought on that.
1 fat tyres with lots of nobbie bits to gain grip and stay on top of the mud Or
2 Thin tyres to cut through the mud and dig in to the firmer dirt below.

Heeeeeeeeeeelooo Nerd here

I think I go with the school of thought of skinnier tyres and cut through the mud, so 2.1 max. Although I only currently have my Verticals which are 2.35 and I use them all year round!

Mud clearance plays a critical part.. Even if you have big tyres and the mud can't clear in time your be going no where and end up poking sticks at the bike to clear it.
