Going to order a new wheelset with some Chrimbo money and have seen a few combo's at a good price
all come with Hope Pro 2 evo hubs and double butted spokes fully built up and delivered for about £275-£295

rim choice is

Marvic XC717
Marvic EN521
Original Hope Hoop's, ZTR Flow
DT Swiss XR400

prob going all black rims/spoke/hub but might be tempted to get a colored hub to be a bit bling?

i Ride mostly XC but do intend to do some bigger jumps drops etc as my skills grow, my weights about 12.5 stone. any thoughts or other recommendations in same price range, im thinking the ZTR's but looking for advice?

I have ZTR Crest (on ZTR hubs) rims, very happy with them. Flows are probably unnecessarily burly for an hardtail XC race bike.

Whatever you get, make sure they are tubeless compatible... it's definitely the way to go!

I'd have a word with Dan at Stanley bridge cycles in Waltham Abbey, Hes a real good guy and helped me out last month when replacing my rear wheel on the remedy.

I have got the older Tweet Tweets and apart from their looks I haven't really got much good to say about their performance! I had them built onto Pro 2's and have heard that the Evo rims are better but I've found that the Tweet tweet anodizing scratches easily, they aren't particularly stiff and save weight by not using eyelets on the spoke holes.

I run Mavic EX721's on my Yeti and had no issues and stay nice and true! I would recommend going Mavic as they have a long standing history of good rims.

I've been offered a set of Easton XC ones for £220, second hand but new and never fitted.

Well I was recommended the spanks by a group of mates that are living out in whistler giving some real abuse, so I'm confident that they live up to expectations here. They haven't had one problem yet.

It's not all about the best components either, if it's laced together by a monkey then even the most bomb wheel will not last

I know the rims are more than substantial enough as otherwise people wouldn't buy them and dont get me wrong i wasn't saying they would be a bad option by any means. I was just saying in my experience in comparison to Mavics for example!

Also if you want a strong light rim the Halo 4xr is a good option as they are light and will withstand anything you throw at them!

You think there really upto a pounding, bikerader said there prone to issues if ridden hard? You had any issues with the free hubs?
he wants 20 quid to post but think I could get a few more quid off, thinking a cheeky £260 delivered

Never had a hint of a problem with either of my sets, they stay true and nothing has ever come looss in 2 yr.
Don't forget bike radar is rating them as a £500+ wheel set and not at the price point you can get them for. if your gonna ride hard enough to break a £500 set of wheels you could have problems with any of them. You certainly won't do it XC'ing in Essex.
