Hey,

Right currently i have been going to the hassle of taking my bikes apart and putting them in my car, either boot of bike bag. Now i know I'm being lazy BUT have been looking at a Saris Bones 2 so i then have boot space and don't get the car as dirty.

I have a 54 plate Lexus IS200 and so the number plate is on the boot and believe it would be obscured by bikes.

Has anyone used or can recommend a carrier that would resolve this, OR anyone know about costs to wire in a light board?

I have heard if you just wack a number plate on the last bike it normally resolves this issue as the lights are not as obscured but just looking at the whole picture before i make a decision either way!

You can't just stick a 'plate on the back as the 'plate is also required to be illuminated....

Wiring in a towing socket should be easy and cheap... (actually, maybe speak to Damo as he's just recommending a place to another guy re towbar fitting so might be good option for just socket fitting.)

I'm looking at doing the same. Just have to get hold of a 7 pin plug and wire it into the rear light cluster, which shouldn't be too hard. I have a Saris Bones 2 but haven't used it on the current car yet as it's and estate so I just bung the bike in the back.
You can buy kits like this: http://www.just-tow.co.uk/7-pin-kit-for ... 04-05.html, which should mean you comply with any warranty and insurance requirements (some insurers don't like 'universal kits').

Hmmm see this is the thing rear mounting seems such a electrical faff and once you've got the cost of the rack, board, plate made and electrics sorted you've saved no money to having them roof mounted have you?!

I think for the additional hassle of electrics etc i will go roof bars and rack, I can get a Monc Blanc roof bars and fittings, locks, and 2 monc blanc barracuda's for less than £210.

When you take into account that the Saris Bones is about £100 mark then electrics which if its anything like the Eccles put up its about another £75, plus board £20 and additional no. plate £10 your looking at £205 roughly and far more hassle.

Downside is that roof bars make a horrible racket

Thats different! haha....doesnt look like it fits saloons though!

I have a mondeo (similar shape and layout) and use the halfords advanced rear high mount 3 cycle carrier (clamp fitting) and it is superb, well worth the £100 asking price. doesnt obscure the number plate and is easy to fit and use.

Have you had any issues with it? the bike feel secure enough on the back?

No issues at all and ive had my full sus on it travelling at 70 mph on the m25 in strong winds and the bike didnt move. it also fits to the car well (make sure you get the clamp one and not the strap fitting). you can buy extra and longer straps for it aswell to secure the bike even more if you want the extra piece of mind, although i havent needed to.
highly recommended....and no i dont work for halfords, its just a good product.
