Enjoy beardee
I've done this ride a couple of times before and really enjoyed it....bit of a longish slog at the start from memory
There's a black bit you should try just off the red route with a few small jumps.....nothing too scary but good fun.

Cheers Hopster and welcome to the forum.

You ridden afan? how does it compare to the black/red? do-able on a HT?

You been since the new black stuff was added?

Cheers for the welcome beardee
I've not done Afan so I can't compare. Your hardtail will be fine
I think the first time I rode it I was on a HT.....last time I went was a couple of years ago so the new black stuff has probably been added since then.
Anyway have fun and let us know how you get on.

First off apologies to Dazer, I put him off coming after seeing the weather forecast and reading another forum comparing it unfavourably to cannock.

Saturday was so windy the ticket hut blew away and a huge tree fell near the start of the trails and it was all closed. Sunday was open though seriously windy still. When I tipped the bike over on its bars and rear wheel to fit the front wheel it blew over and the car was rocking in the carpark. decided not to ride the high woodwork section featured in all the photos ;)

Set off to just ride the red, the climb was long and steady not technical life afan. Kept losing front wheel on tight switchback corner, defainately not mud x territory this place. Rode the red and all the blacks and most of the trails marked extreme, except the two dirt jump sections, the b-line (didnt fancy moist woodwork with mud tyres and high winds)

This place blew me away, definatley the most technical red trail ive ridden, the black trails were great, lots of airtime and huge berms, Lots of great little bits you can loop, a great jump section by a bridge with lots of jumps, tables and doubles. Unfortunately, I though this was at the end and did 6 laps of this. It wasnt there was some evil climbing left and some great descents. Gears were starting to break so had to push some of it.

Near the start/carpark/trail centre is what makes this place so good, theres a skills section which gets technical and big in places, with loops of drops, berms, jumps and shore sections. Other side of the carpark, theres a great pump track and a freeride section. Not sure if it was the winds or maintenance but the freeride section was closed. Huge stuff on that, massive tables and doubles, Theres a path leading round so you can see the freeride section without riding it with the biggest berm ive ever seen, totally dwarfed by it. Tried to hit it at full speed but still needed two goes up to get up and around it.

The trails are all pretty much stone/armoured with not many muddy sections, so something fast rolling with some grip would work well. was do-able on a ht but will be more fun with bounce.

Comparisons to cannock made me laugh, the warm up skills section is better than cannock and whilst it may not have the number or length of trails as Afan its more technical and bit more fun, so afans a good indicator for people who have ridden there.

Would definately recommend this place, its a nightmare journey and on top of a wet mountain range but worth it, will definatley be back for more...
