IM going to get myself a dropper seatpost, i've measured all the sizes of my original one, but was wandering about the different options available - mainly the length really. On CRC threre are a few different versions, 380mm,400 and 420mm I think. Is the measurement the overall length of the post or the maximium amount of post that can stick out of the frame?
Jim - 3 measurements to consider:
- seat post diameter - most are 30.9 or 31.6mm - you need to check the seat tube on your frame is big enough - you can measure it or this measurement is usually marked on your seat post; there are a few posts coming out now in the smaller 27.2mm diameter as well
- seat post length - as you say this is the overall length of the post - no different to non-dropper posts and is determine by your frame size and geometry - again have a look at your existing post - most have the length marked on it
- the drop i.e. ho much the get will drop when you activate the post release - most are either 100mm or 125mm but you can get some up to 150mm now I think
I'd definitely recommend going with the bar mounted remote rather than the lever under the saddle approach
Also you need to decide if you want to go the hydraulic (fluid based route) - e.g. the Rockshox Reverb - or gear cable route e.g. KS i900 or i950r.
I've just ordered a Reverb and also have a KS i900r - the latter has been fine - just needs a bit of TLC every 3-4 months - 15 mins job but Karve hasn't been as fortunate and has had 2 KS posts and had to send both back - seems to be a bit of a luck involved as to when they rolled off the production line.
Earlier versions of the Reverb weren't without issues either but I'm hoping the 2012 ones with, supposedly, improved seals should be better.
Oh, if you do go the Reverb route - you need to think about which side you want to run the remote lever and whether you want to run it under or over the bar - e.g. I want to run it on the left hand side, under the bar - so have ordered a RH lever one!! If I'd wanted to run it above the bar on the LH side - I'd need a LH one.
Other makes are a little bit more ambidextrous I think
