Good morning Peeps...

So, my birthday is coming up and I've informed Surfette I don't need yet another waterproof jacket as I think it won't eally perform much better that the 2 I've got.

So, the next thing I need is protection for knees and maybe shins...

I just need to decide whether I need just knee pads.. eg. 661 Kyle Strait Knee

I'd be interested to hear your views on each approach.

I do a lot of XC and would like some protection but also want to be able to cover off some big trail centre stuff this year so why I started considering the shin protection too...

I used the knee only for quite some time but i kept slipping pedals and it hurt the shins too much

i bought the second set of knee/shin you posted.
they are unbreakable as far as i can see so far they have numerous gouges from various pedal strikes and none have hit my shin including to the rear as they cover the calf too.
For xc they would not be especially useful as they are very cumbersome and indeed they rub on your knee as they are not a sock type fit.
I also have to wear mine on opposite legs to ensure they stay in place but that may just be me having odd shaped legs ?
As for protection they are excellent but for xc you need something with more movement.

I haven't used the Pro shins so i can't comment only the comps and kyle straits.

Knee and shin m8 *_*

I used to swear by my knee/shin 661 'stormtrooper' guards. But since riding with 5/10's I have never slipped a pedal! I've since moved on to the Kyle Strait knee guards only and won't be going back!

The knee guards are considerably lighter and more practical for longer mixed rides. I still get serious cuts to the back of my calfs when it all goes wrong but I used to get that with the knee/shin combo anyway....Chicks dig scars....apparantly!?

IMO if your slipping pedals then you should address your shoe/pedal combo.

If you want maximum protection and are going to ride crazy stuff all time and don't really do 'long' rides then definetly go for knee/shin.

If you riding discipline is varied and you don't slip pedals then knee only every time!

I do do a fair few miles xc as try to get out at least once a week in winter (up to about 20 miles) and at least twice a week when the weather get's a bit better ( like now )

Luckily I don't seem to slip pedals much so maybe the Knee option is the way to go for me.

Also, the Kyle Strait seem to have disappeared from crc, evans, etc. and can only see Rage on there and on 661 own site. Has the Rage taken over as that option? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=72468

The kyle strait are hard shell inside so maybe some veggie pads would be better or maybe look at d30 stuff as it will be much lighter yet still offer the protection.

Up to you but to hot and bet you don't wear again.

Yeah looks like the kyle straits are discontinued....replaced with the Rage range. From the pics they look very similar to the kyle straits.

The ones that eccles posted the link for look ideal though! Nice price too!

I have the Kyle straights but also the veggie shin guard which is seperate protection for your shins. Maybe mix and matching the two will be better for you? Put on the shin guards when needed.

I have the Kyle Straights one's you've seen them.. they are megga comfy and don't know your wearing them (until one slips down)

Never felt the need for full shin guards as well.. as like you i mainly do XC never had issues before and I ride with the DMR v8 pedals.

Check out leasurelakes for cycling gear as well.. that's where I got my pads from.. good price too.

I've had the first knee/shin you posted up for around 4 months. I mostly do 2-3 hour trail/xc rides over Thordon and find them alright. Do not find them uncomfortable until 2 hours in where you may ned to lossen off a little. Does not feel restricitive in movement when riding. Have not tested how well they deal with inpacts properly thank god but from the little offs i have had they have been fine, don't move around at all. Might be abit warm in summer but lovely in winter. Am think of getting veggie one for summer

I go for knee only. I always ride clipped in these days, so no pins to rip my shins to shreds!
