Hi all,

I was considering getting a pair of Mavics XC717 which Superstar are doing at the moment but I've read some mixed reviews of the rims - anyone use 'em and if so what do they think of them?

Any other recommendations for a decent set (mostly gonna be for XC use) would be grand.

Cheers

Hi,

I've had xc717s on various bikes over the years and always found them great. Used mainly for XC but have been blasted down various welsh hillsides and off reasonable sized drops without much damage - although I'm no more than 11stone in full kit.

They build a pretty stiff wheelset and are light but not as light as the Stans rims like the crest - although if reports are to be believed the crest are a bit flexy. All the mavic rims have eyelets, unlike the stans so in theory should be a bit tougher.

Only draw back really is that if you like to run bigger tyres (bigger than 2.2 ish) the 17mm internal rim can pinch the tyre a bit (they say 2.1 in their marketing but the rim sticker say 2.3). If you like a bigger tyre or looking at something a bit more durable then look at the XM719 for a few grams heavier.

Nice one, very helpful.

I hadn't even considered the tires

l'll be fitting a pair of mountain kings which are 2.2 so hopefully these should be ok.

Thanks for the reply

Jim

I've just upgraded my wheels today... I have some mavic cross rides if any good... the front is perfect the back is slightly out of true but there is some front and back play with the brake on... when I took the wheel off the centre lock to 6bolt converter was loose so I'm not sure if this was the cause... Anyway point is you can try them and if you are happy just give me a score :D

Cheers for the offer, very kind of you. I'll have a think about it as I may have seen some others now

BTW I'll be interested in hearing how your new wheels are - they (and the bike) look very nice.
