Hi all

I need to buy a new rear derailer after a high speed incident with a log today and was wondering what the difference was between long cage and medium cage?

Cheers

I was always told that you use a short cage for 1 front ring, medium for 2, and long for 3. I'm sure there's room for manoeuvre depending on personal preference and other chain and gearing-related tweaks though.

If you use a triple front and max 32 t on rear cassette you can use a medium cage and still obtain all the gears. If you run a 34 or 36 cassette then you'll need a long cage.
