Hi, I am new to mountain bking and to this forum. I live in Essex and want to make use of the many trails that are available. I am so new in fact, I do not have a bike yet, so I am wondering if you had a recommendations for a first bike. Since I am new to it all, I do not want to be spending too much on one, say less that £400 as an absolute maximum.

What sort of riding do you want to be doing?

Just offroad trail riding I think. Not downhill or racing.

Then there is some bargains to be had.
Decathlon do some real good deals on bikes, as such Ebay. but beware on paying too much for the wrong thing.
In this price bracket the thing to look for is the best fork.
Try to stay away from the likes of Suntour or even the bottom end Rockshox as you'll end up replacing them pretty quickly

Thanks again for all the advice, just bought myself this one from a local store in Shenfield. Really pleased with this as a first bike. Now to get it out there on some XC Trails and learn to ride it....
