Looking at replacing various warnout parts, currently bike has sram gearing, Im going to buy new shimano rear mech and shifters. If Replaced the sram cassette with a shimano one do I need to change the chain and front sprockets to shimano too??

No the chains n cogs are interchangeable it's only mech and shifters that have issues

And just to make matters a bit more interesting, some mechs and shifters are interchangeable too

Shimano front mechs will definitely work with sram shifters, but I think shimano rear mechs will only work with shimano shifters (something to do with actuation ratios). No idea about shimano shifters and sram mechs.

To cause even more confusion, Sram did at one point make a rear shifter that was compatible with Shimano rear mechs, I vaguely recall they were Sram Attack and at a similar level to the x5 range.

From what I gather named SRAM are compatible with shimano but numbered are not
