Hi guys !

i m thinking to get a new casette for my giant reign 0 2010 but i have no idea what to get . i know it need to be light and strong . any tips please !!!

How many cogs?
whats the current running gear spec like?
why are you replacing it?
is the chain worn also ?

Running gear is shifter x9 deraill x0 , how can i find out about cogs (sorry for that ) and i like to replace just to get something new and nice .current one is 9 speed . chain is fine but i can get a new one ll together if you can recommend me one

Are you not supposed to always replace rear cassettes and chains together, or is that an old wives tale ?

Its generally shown that the reason for cassettes needing replacement is due to the chain stretch
it depends on how worn the cassette is

if you just want shiny take it off and spend 5-10mins with a tooth brush and loads of fairy liquid

cassettes take minimal cleaning to come up lovely and shiny.
also worth noting that cassettes do not require any oil on them what so ever.

The general advice is chains and cassettes together however, mtb chains get dragged through a lot more crap than road bikes and thus stretch faster. So like nwmlarge says, the chain is often the culprit and you might get 2 or even 3 chains to one cassette. (They don't actually stretch of course but the pins and rollers wear, so they get looser and longer).

The best bet is to inspect the cassette and see if the teeth are hooked, pointy, damaged or missing.

If yes, new cassette and chain.
If no, just get a new chain and see if it indexes ok. (do this by riding, not just on the stand, as the problems usually show up under load)
If yes, happy days
If no, order new cassette.

Other than that the main rule of thumbs is if you have a alloy freehub body found on posh wheels, in particular Hope hubs, get a more expensive cassette (XTor PG980 or above) with an alloy carrier. The cheaper steel ones dig into the alloy free hub and then you can never get them off!

If you have shimano hubs with steel freehubs, anything will do and its just down to weight and budget.

the steel cassette fuses to the aluminum hub, this happens almost everywhere aluminum and steel mate together (i see it in car stuff alot) it is caused by heat build up mostly due to tiny (fractional) amount of movement and the two metals fuse creating a new alloy !

PG980 i would of gone for a 990 but its an extra 10er for red! WTF!

I know what you mean Jon, it's the same reason alloy posts get stuck in steel frames but in this case it's def. the digging in. I've seen it on bikes I've worked on for a few people. It's because the cheaper cassettes are just riveted together so each steel cog digs into the softer alloy. On the pricier cassettes the alloy carrier spreads the load.

Those XX ones are a work of art. I'd just put it on the mantle piece and look at it rather than on my bike!

980's here too.

I run the 980 as I couldn't justify the extra for 35g less weight. Thought you'd want the one in red VW?

I what I normally opt for, but an extra tenner over 980 its not worth it
