Ended up bailing after about 20 miles - was fun though. Very muddy, the route went across a recently ploughed field ... walk and clog up your shoes / cleats, or struggle across and totally clag up your tyres, well I rode but it was hard going. There was a puddle on one part of the route which went right across the trail at the bottom of a hill, looked like a bit of a water splash so I went for it .... turned out to be a bit "Vicar of Dibbley" in it's depth and I wasn't ready to pedal as I was intending to roll through - water came over the crossbar !! - anyway, I had to pump up my rear tyre so I watched a few others suffer the same fate - I cold have warned them, but where's the fun in that??
I bailed because I'd suffered two rear punctures and then a spare tube donated by a fellow rider had a dodgy valve and kept deflating and after pumping it up fo rthe umpteenth time I just decided to call it a day.
It was mostly rideable, but hard going in parts where it had been churned into gloopy mush. I overheard a couple of guys saying that the London to Brighton off-road ride was easier! - mainly because it was mostly dry I suspect.

I bailed out this ride as I expected to be very bad due the weather and the amount of riders going through the trails non stop, I think I made the right choice.

I think you made a good call! - It would have been so much beter if it had been a bit dryer, but the ground was so wet that it got really churned up.

Did you LOOK at Garmins or not your thing?
The clay field didn't sound much fun.

Track well signpost?

I had a look at the gpx file that was provided for the route and I had "MapMyRide" running on my phone, on the face of it, prior to the ride the map looked OK. I didn't use anything to navigate the route other than the signposts, which was mostly very good although there were a couple of ambiguous ones, fortunately we took the right route most of the time and the one time we totally missed one of the signs, we'd only gone about 50metres before a lady walking a dog told us we were going the wrong way and that we'd missed a sign on a tree. At that point we were in the front 10 riders so there wasn't any obvious tracks to follow and we just took a wrong line.

As for the field, well I'm sure there was probably a footpath across it, but it had just been ploughed. I imagine after a few more bikes had been over it, it would have compacted down a bit and been easier to ride. At that point we were still near the front of the pack, before I had any punctures.
