This article puts over a lot of good points as to why you should make that decision carefully.

It even gives you examples or more suited models

My mate james has just gone from a big Extended travel 180mm stinky to a 140mm Commencal Absolute SX and is very happy with it.

the sx is a much more throwable bike than the stinky.

Im riding my 80mm travel base model rockshocked rockhopper expert for as long as i dare before i think im going to damage it so i learn how to ride to the best of my ability and my bikes!
i am looking to get a bike with more freeride / downhill capabilities soon as my rockhopper is on a scheme and im going to be paying for it til next november! and i want to keep it solely for xc and going out with my daughter who is 8.
so my reasons are not for testosterone overload just common sense and progression / preservation.
i think you need to learn to ride a bike ...any bike ! before getting ideas above your station...much like your first car as a youngun!

LOL I keep looking for a frame that's exactly the same geometry as my hardtail but with some rear suspension, and i'm still not sure why! for comfort possibly or because i'm getting lazy in my old age or because of the confidence it may possibly provide on some of the larger drops ?

but it would have to be right on the money as my current frame is just so right for me !

Jon, you'll have to have a spin down the runs on my bike.. Nice short travel with simple rear shock pumped up nice and firm so not a million miles from HT but soaks up the rough stuff :)

My first car was a BMW 318is as a youngun, !!! followed by a scooby impreza wrx. The start of this year i sold my celica GT4 wrc ltd edtn. An now ride a yamaha yzf R125 untill i can be botherd to buy something bigger. The bike i currently ride is "shit" in a word. i rode jedis bike yesterday , and i flet like there was a massive improvment. could i maual on my bike  no matter how hard i tryed.. could i on the Transition  first bloody go. What im trying to say is sometimes your tools can slow you down if you dont have the correct ones for the job. If you want to learn how to ride, visit www.ukbikeskills.co.uk , I did an cant recomend them enough. ( i now have real skills )

This would be ideal i think. The forks are Marzocchi 55RS 160mm, with a marzocchi R w/piggyback rear shock.
An in my price range. Should have the money in january at some point. So i'll be looking at getting it a bit cheaper if i can or something similar.

Everyone is still learning every time they go out. By the sounds of it your plod?? and driving on the wrong side of the road isnt clever blue lights or not. I thought poice are supposed to have extra driver training????? could have fooled me. My misses car was wrote of by a police officer and the work car i was in in front of her!!!!! not to mention a small detail she was 7 months pregnant with my daughter !!!! im just greatful my (now) daughter Alice came out ok. and my 4 yr old son was in the back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF i come across a bit harsh im sure what i just wrote will explain my dislike.
enjoy the rest of your day :|

As Muzza has said, for most riding in the UK you never really need that much travel.
I think the TR250 I've got was run at 180 once when Dan (Norcbot) had it and changed back straight away!
There's no need for it on most UK trails.
Plus hard tail or short travel will make you ride smoother, as hanging up etc becomes more noticeable :)
