I do think a full dh bike is totally overkill for anywhere in essex, its just so damn flat, and we all know trail bikes can handle the same terrain, but if downhill is the only discipline you ride and you spend alot of time at uplifts why not ride something you WANT to ride? I personally dont want to only own one though, id have to have another full purpose bike. Im still debating an orange 224 or patriot as my next bike and keeping what I have or swapping for a lighter hard tail or short travel bike for danbury chicksands etc etc

just to pick up on what you said on hard tails nothing else.
Since i started ive rode a HT and the places ive been are.... danbury, thordon / warley hill / langdon hills / PORC / chicksands... not to mention uk bike skills.. so that gives me the experince to coment. They are no fun at all. I go to my job mon-fri to WORK ,,,, when i get on my bike i want to have FUN. I dont really care if some people say "yeah but it makes you more skillful"..... OH really! does it ?..... ok then i'll swap you my skillful hardtail for your 3k susser!!! YEP !!! Didnt think so. . OK, next time i see you feel free to WORK away getting skillful on my hardtail while i have oooodles of FUN o your susser!!! sounds like a great deal to me.

Thats all personal preference, tell a 4x rider hardtails are no fun, or a dirt jumper!! I would like a lightweight bike to chuck about, wether it be a slopestyle similar to james's or a 4x bike, theyre both so light and different to ride a bike like mine weighing in at nearly 16kg, james's bike must be half that weight, and alot easier to throw around. I havent ridden a hardtail in years but im keen to give a 4x style (low top tube) hardtail bike ago at danbury, Its so smooth there anyway. And I certainly dont need 16kgs of 160mm travel to enjoy danbury,

My debate atm is wether to use my current bike for where I go and get a big rig for uplift days in wales, or get a small lightweight bike, I enjoy downhill as a discipline the most, but my current bike copes more then well enough at these uplift days, so even though I want a super plush DH bike for away days, it actually might make mroe sens to get a little throw around bike for the local days. I think it would broaden my riding alot better, but its that versus doing what I love the most :) Choice is a beautiful thing!

For you maybe... i :!:

I've been to all those places (except Warley) and others on my HT and enjoy every minute of it, although like the post above my background is BMX and my HT is like a big BMX but with gears which is probably why i like it so much, i spent a long time researching and buying the frame i wanted but riding across fields and through woods generally bores the tears off me but i still do it because i have little choice when out local so i do it for fitness when i can get to terrain that is more fun, its just that - fun

i feel its all down to opinion and expectation and also not all HT are the same - apparently

if your bike sucks for you, it may be fine for someone else - do something about it.

 trust me i am, I think if iever buy another HT it will be a S/DJ style geometry frame. I hate the fact that the cross bar is so high & level on mine, it gets in the way really. Im also 6ft - 6ft 1 .... and my bike is large. "IT FEELS FOOKING HORRIBLE".... yes it is persoal choice, but people need to ride them before stating how great they should be. Only if you lot saw the IMIDIATE change in my over all flow on jedi's transition then you would know what im talking about.

thats my point about my bike. it is neither 4x or DJ... or anything near it. the comment i was wrighting while you were wrighting yours, infact mirrors quite a lot. Also the HT's you are describing hold a key word "DESIGN" thats why they will work. An mine will not. although both being HT's they are worlds apart.

Mick your bike is def the wrong style for what you want.
it could be tidied up by adding a shorter stem and a taller fork but as you already have an idea of what you want then you may as well reserve the funds for that

Of all those i only like the look of the nukeproof rook but thats just me

considering there's not a single slope style run in the UK i'd go for something a little less specific perhaps more AM/trail than SS/DH

I read this article before and completely agree with it. I started on hardtails, and am a much smoother/better rider for it. If anyone want's to improve riding a bike, you need to start on bikes which will improve your riding.

Someone buying a downhill bike for danbury etc makes me laugh, you need an AM bike maximum. If you race DH then fair enough, get a DH bike. If your mainly hitting a few jumps and things, you will have far more fun on a hardtail, as that's what their made for.

A decent AM bike will do almost everything. I went to Revolution bike park recently, probably one of the hardest Dh tracks in the UK (think FOD but a lot worse). The quickest guy there was on a Nukeproof mega. There was a guy on a brand new Demo who wouldn't even hit the double black run, it's just a joke really.

What people don't realise is that if most of their riding is AM type, a heavy long travel bike is a hinderance.

it's just a name jon.

i think most of the uk parks i've visited are slopestyle orientated.

drops jumps flowy but short trails that don't require a whole lot of pedalling thats slopestyle to me.

Isn't that basically what the original article is saying, that there is little to no need for a huge travel bike, anything over 180 is a waste/pointless and also the more travel you have the more hassle it brings with it.

surely slopestyle is a discipline, it has its own competitions etc... and it has very distinct courses/track./whatever

drops jumps flowy but short trails that don't require a whole lot of pedaling thats trail riding to me. ? a more natural type of terrain

there's that opinion thing again LOL

each to their own, as long as its fun.

i take what you are saying, to me trail riding would be anything that requires more pedalling than danbury or chicksands.

the blue and red trails at cannop would be what i would consider trail riding.
