I've been riding clipped in for years had a few years off and a few stacks.last year fitness started coming back but not confidence. I'm thinking of starting the year unclipped to build up confidence again before clipping back in.
Any thoughts on how this will effect riding would be cool
Thanks Adam

Unclipped will save you falling off from being stuck in them.
if you just do xc just loosen them right off so its easy to get in and out and perhaps lower the seat an inch

I ride xc clipped and fall off less than others i ride with especially in the mud , i find because im clipped in i pedal at things more and dont take my foot out unless i really have to.
as far as fitness i find doing miles so much easier.
as above just put them on loosest setting !

I have tried SPD before about 10 years ago, while they are brilliant for mile muchers i would never go back in if i'm just over thorndon or epping. Get the best pedels/shoes you can get/afford to to offer the most amount of grip (i run DMR vaults and teva shoes (510 as meant to be even better)) and you won't look back or go back.

Five tens and flats are a very very good combination, it took me a while to get used to how stuck to the peddles you become, i still have slight issues where i somehow manage to not plant my foot straight at the beginning of a run and then i'm knackered as i cant correct it easily !! noyt only the grip, they are so well made and padded, i'm totally sold on mine.

Snap......well almost, You get the gravels for a decent price ? I love vans, got lots of em but the gravels seem pretty rare and pricey , just got some vans scott cramner instead about half the price http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=vans+s ... F-8#miuv=0

I've got crank bros so pretty easy to unclick .it's stuff like trail obstacles and slippery little bridges.
I'm going to try my mallets and trail walking trainers or old dc s
Cheers for the thoughts guys

Flats for the skills - clips for the speed

IMO Ride flats until you are happy with your skills... im still on flats........ then go to clips to add more speed and efficiency

Unless your doing lots of leg pounding XC in which case you have to use clips as its just more efficient.

Tried both, each is a tool for the specific job. XC riding has to be clipped as you use the whole leg stroke. Trail riding where it can get rooty/rocky/techy = flats, unless you are skilled and confident enough to ride it. I've had some stupid offs wearing clips....even by rolling over a tree stump as I wasn't paying attention. But then I rode the Dragons Back at CYB clipped in and had no problems, although I think I might have fallen over in the car park....

That was a joke by the way, about the car park, no honest, it was!

I tried mallets as well, but didn't like them much. Now I just have Shimano AM41's, they are super grippy and wipe clean!
