Gps Blamed For Bike Theft Increase - been mentioned before but worth posting up here again

For those that use Strava and are not aware - you can set a privacy zone (500m radius) around home or work or anywhere - it's set up under settings>privacy

Here's the story. And as above always start GPS away from your home. Even my phone one I use for the car does not have my home address in it...

I have my privacy zones set up on all end points, work, home and the gf's

Yeah - kryptonite d-locks and an alert neighbour kept my bikes safe, but I won't be posting pics of assets to social media sites again...I can't be sure that was to blame, but better safe than sorry I reckon.

Another thing to be wary of is posting your location when you update your status on Facebook and other similar websites.

I noticed a group of guys watching me put the bike in and out of the garage a few times recently so have stepped up my security and now have gold rated locks and ground anchors etc as well as a couple of the padlock alarms. I also insured my new bike which puts my mind at rest slightly.

All extra costs but worth it when you think how much it would cost to replace your pride and joy!

I have mine insured for £140 a year its worth while
lots of people would do well to check their upper limit for bicycles on their home insurance as many are dropping the values without pointing it out.

it is not unusual for people to own a bike worth more than a grand these days so the insurers are upping the premiums to match

I have the AA for my contents and buildings. They turned out to be one of the best. You can list your bikes over £500 as specified items and they have a pretty high upper limit. Also they cover them if they are in a shed in your garden, even if they're not locked! Both contents and buildings was just over £230 (waiting for £38 cashback via Quidco too). M & S used to be good for bike but now their upper limit has been reduced.

I went with velosure in the end as they cover theft and accidental damage, even when racing! So I don't have to worry about killing my pride and joy if I get a little loose on the trail!

It wasn't cheap by any stretch of the imagination but to cover my new Mondraker (rrp £3000.00) and Cove (rrp £1,700) it costs me about £270.00 a year both covered for in the car/garage and whilst away on holiday as well. They are pretty strict on what locks to use and ground anchors at home (they need to be gold sold secure ones for my bike) but like I said above its all worth it in the end.

I really can believe these guys are checking strava to see where people live. Not having your bike insured is absolute madness, I have both mine insured and make a point of not putting photos of my bikes online any more. With the amount of money they cost us it doesn't make sense not insuring them. If mine got stolen (and wasn't insured) i wouldn't have the cash to just buy another one. It really doesn't cost much I think both mine are covered for around 100 odd quid when you think thats a set of rubber its a no brainer.
