Hi all,

My cousin has just messaged me and he wants to buy a bike, nothing flash just something to clock up some xc type miles with plenty of road involved, he has a limited budget of about £400 and he's 6ft tall

what size frame should he go for ? i'm only short and like a small bike for chucking about and i have no idea when it comes to 'normal riding' ?

I can then look on PB etc and try to find something that will do him.

He would most likely be needing a Large, but if he's got short legs and a long body then maybe a medium.

Im 6ft2 ish, and needed a 21inch Rockhopper, the 19 was too cramped. I take a 34inch leg trouser if that's any help

It all helps, i'll find out how long his legs are LOL I've told him to go to a bike shop and sit on a few and take note of frame size and stem length so we can see whats comfortable.

Be wary of brand variance also - one man's medium Lapierre is another man's small <insert brand name here>.

Best advice is to sit on heaps and learn the actual lengths of the one that fits, but you also have a small amount of room to change things up with shorter/longer stems, bar backsweeps, saddle positions etc. Just important to make sure his body position is correct so all those miles don't equate to an injury over time. The latest MBUK mag has a good section on all this. It says something about keeping your arms perpendicular to your back when seated and holding the bars...but shops should help him out with this. Just go ask and learn.

I'm 5'11 and 32" inseam. | had a Hardrock 19" that was perfect for me, really enjoyed it on the trails, later I got a 20" bike. This one inch made a huge difference, I've never felt really comfy and therefore never bonded with the bike. Tell him to try out feel bikes on the shops and then you can buy sure about the size on ebay, pinkbike, etc...
