Hello everyone I'm Andy from Heybridge

I stopped mountain biking about 5 yrs ago and have since put on a few pounds (well about 3 stone to be more precise lol) so I'm thinking about getting back into it. Iv seen that there seems to be some good trails at danbury common so will be using there for my local rides.

I could do with some advice on what bike to get, iv already decided it will be a hardtail and was thinking of maybe 140mm travel up front as I want to be able to enjoy the downhills but I still need to be able to ride the ups. My max budget is probably around £800

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I hope to see some of you as soon as I get back on 2 wheels

Il be happy with a slow pace I'm really out of shape at mo lol

I'm not sure how long it will be till I get a bike but hopefully not long. It was the other half that suggested I get a bike again but she thought £150 would cover it lol. Iv been looking for a couple of days now and the more I'm looking the more I want to get back out there asap.

I had 4 years off after kids and got up to 18st it's a self build onone 456 and thanks :) not quite finished as I'm a mature ? Student at the moment so cash is tight.
Try eBay or pink bike to get a deal but my frame was £99 new and I spent £200 on an eBay donor bike and have slowly upgraded.

That is the frame at top of my list at mo as seems to get good reviews. My only worry is iv never built a bike before and although I sort of know where everything goes getting it all to work is another story lol. But the better half would be happy if I save a few quid as although I'm not a student I am in a poorly paid job well when my gf has 3 kids it seems poor lol

Hard-tail with 120-140 on the front is an excellent starting point Andy469
You can go wrong with one of the main brands these days they all do good stuff

http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/gear/categ ... a-13-47090
http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/gear/categ ... x-13-47080
http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/gear/categ ... l-13-47085

or such like look like solid specs and geo for the money. Hard to find a 26er at that price range these days

Getting a frame and building it up would deffo be the fun option.

Andy/Adam,

Similar story to you guys, used to do a little bit of biking 7 yrs ago + and then had a number of operations after injuries and put on a good few pounds as well. Just recently did a little "welcome back" course up at Woburn and now looking at getting back into a bit of biking - sounds perfect for me what you guys are talking about, taking it easy to start with, so just let me know when you guys are fixing somethign up and I might just join you... cheers,

Neil

Hi Neil I'm looking at getting a new frame then finding the bits I need either on eBay or just buying new as and when funds allow/ I find what I need so I could be a little while but the more I sit here watching horrid Henry on the tv the more I feel I need to get back out there lol

No worries Neil I'm not good at gently gently I had lost 21/2 stone between Xmas and my op 19th of April. I planned on touching up my trail notes on Danbury over the summer. I still know where to go but I occasionally pop out of a trail and go ah we are here

I'm hovering around the 16 stone at mo maybe 16 1/2 on a bad day it's my general all round fitness that bothers me the most. When getting socks on in the morning is a struggle you know it's time to sort it out.

Anselm I like the look of that but I think I'm going the route of an on one 456 frame then building it up. It might take a bit longer but like people have said on here it's more fun and if anything goes wrong il know how to fix or replace it
