OK. So I've pondered with the idea for ages but now I want to think about putting it into action. I have a section of woods at the end of my property that are joined to Wormley woods. I've got a Mini Digger and a 1.5 tonne dumper. The only problem is I have no idea how to design or build jumps. This is gonna be a practice section for me to play around on and probably hurt myself. I'm going to be adding lots of pictures. This is to give you an idea of scale depth and so people can add their own views on what would work best. I'll also add some lengths once I get one of those wheel things to measure distances.

Pictures to follow.

The pictures give an idea of scale but not depth. I'm working on a plan to mark out trees and distances between each. Then I can try to go from there. I'll upload a sketch when done

But not just jumps.....

You really gotta think about getting some big berms in early, Jumps can go anywhere, but berms are best ,where the existing terrain wants them.

If you see what I mean..

I've spent quite a bit of time looking and trying to vision what should go where. I think it'll be good to have three main lines that at some stages inter connect with the others. The only problem would be at the bottom. By the time you get down there you'll be carrying a lot of speed and there would need to be some sort of wood work to go up the other bank.

Hi.

What do pro trail builders use ? Is there some sort of software ?

As suggested, try and use the existing terrain and see if it suggests turns at certain sport and needs berms, etc. Id guess a problem with runs that arnt real steep/high is that all the speed can be sapped up.

Ive not build jumps myself but they arnt too hard I would of thought, getting berms in is gonna be harder/involve more digging.

Theyve built lots of new trails near me on (and outside) the Olympic XC track area, perhaps take a visit to get some ideas (although clearly they have spent a lot of time and money, completely laying down new surfaces, etc)

Heres a vid clip i did >

This thread has all you ever wanted to know and more... :wtf:

Hope it helps, though I usually just go for a berm radius of about 3 x bike length.

Cheers Andy. I'll have a look at that. I was going to just start with a table top to gain speed. Then do each jump and put scaffold boards after each one. Get someone to mark where I land and then put the double starting there. Then just tweak size and towards the bottom with perhaps some northshore here and there instead of a berm have maybe a wood wall. There's a barbed wire fence on the left so it's important there's nothing too big that side and that jump landings are directed away from this to prevent serious injury.

One thing you want to manage is where the rain water will flow. Remember you can't stop it so you need to channel it off the lines so you don't get puddles. Built a lot of dirt jumps and bmx type tracks in the 80's in local woods but never with a digger! oh yeah. .. jealous x3 lol

Cycled past today.. Saw you with the wheelbarrow, that's commitment right there, it was bloody hot this afternoon.

P.S cut the Hawthorns down, they are just bloody puncture machines, not proper trees.
