Officially it's because if your turning right you still need to be able to brake on the road, unofficialy if you get used to braking like that if you use someone else's bike or visa versa you'll end up killing yourself by going over the bars!
Put a front brake on, anyone will tell you, the best brake to use on a MTB is the front, it will slow you down faster. Just dont use it sharply in a corner or on a steep decline

A lot of DJ bikes have the rear level on the right. You should be able to take the lever off, turn it around and put it on the other side.

Solid bikes those, it's a good starter bike for sure.
