Thats about the same at every event, gigs, festivals etc are all expensive. It's journalist spin comparing bottled beer to draft - different products, bottles are always more, you could pay that in an expensive bar in London for a bottle.

£50,000 sculpture is an Olympic souvenir

A GIANT sculpture costing up to £50,000 is to be installed in a prime spot in Hadleigh to commemorate the 2012 Olympic mountain biking event.
The 5m steel structure will be placed in the centre of the roundabout and will symbolise the mountain biking event logo of a man riding a bike downhill on rocky terrain.

Tory Castle Point councillor Ray Howard said: “I couldn’t think of a better location for this sculpture. Millions of people will see it. We hope it will be installed in July, in time for the Games.”

Hadleigh Farm is one of only ten venues outside London which has been chosen to host an Olympic event this year.

I will be there marshalling, as i did on the test event, in my capacity of working for British Cycling (free entry and access all areas). As with any major event its all about the corporate, and out of reach on the whole for the true mountain bike fans, but hopefully it will create a reasonable legacy site in the end, which everyone will get a chance to enjoy. It will no doubt be televised anyway, and with a better view than you are likely to get at the event.

There is a Hadleigh MTB group already setup for this. Very active and with the goal of making this place a venue for all to use after the Olympics...

50k is not going to go a long way but should be used on staff or upkeep of track after event.

I think the place will come into its own AFTER the event when people like us use it and probably use it not as it was intended by creating new lines over existing parts that always seem to work better !!

50k is less than a ECC expenditure for chauffeur/hire cars per month! So not bad really in respect.
Hadleigh should be proud having a once in a lifetime Olympic venue. So a visable statue will be great..(morrisons supermarket opposite has one..which is pretty cool) who would of thought Hadleigh would become a world Class olympic mtb course.
As the Hadleigh MTB Club Chairman i will do everything possible to give the course a fantastic future. I'm fronting a walking tour of the course very soon, so message me if you'd like to come along, and hear about every stage of the course construction & future ideas.
Our next club meeting is Thursday 14th June @ 7.30pm @HOFS

I dont know you guys think so negative about this 50K sculpture.
Hadleigh should be proud having a once in a lifetime Olympic venue.

This statue add new jobs for your area.I think at least 200 people will be engaged in this business.

One thing others don't see is all the money grabbing types and people saying they won't work until we get extra £££££, tube drivers, bus drivers etc...grrrrr

Some of us have to keep on working whilst the games are on and all for the same... Don't get me wrong I'm loving having the games here and even taking a days holiday to celebrate having a party in Chelmsford for when the Olympic flame comes here all at Hylands house... Some things are justifiable others are questionable,
