i've never used etch primer on powder, only ever used it on bare metal, might try that when i get the chance.

I dont know anything on powder coating! We dont do it here so dont know about adherance on those surfaces etc, but yeah etch primer works on other coats too! If we get a job back from the field thats been dented etc, we cant fully strip the paint because of electronics inside we will use fine glass paper and stick a layer of etch primer-primer-then top coat and it adheres completely, well at least thats what I was taught to do, I chromated my bike frame but I stuck a layer of etch on as well because it doesnt do any harm, just reduces chance of the paint chipping and peeling :)

Well..mine will be fully stripped down and replacing seals so out they come, Ill leave the rest up to the spray place, last time I recall he did have slight concerns about magnesium but I said Id had forks done before and they used same paint as on the aluminium frame and it all came out fine..........although did notice later that the frame (Enduro) had crack on it so sold it for about £30 or something stupid !

Andy

Ive just spoke to my team leader whos done other kind of paints and he said he would also be concerned about putting 2k over poweder coat, so atm Im not gonna risk spraying my forks, he has told me to ask one of our subbies what they do as they do alot of powder coating, my team leader doesnt know specifically what would happen if you rubbed down a powder coat and put 2k over the top but has told me that lots of other paints can and will react if you apply a different type over a rubbed down dry coat of another type paint, he mentioned a few that I cant remember lol.

Its definately something worth looking into before whacking a load of 2k over an old powder coat (which im told when rubbed down can have a rubbery texture)

Yup wise to be cautious the only reason i've got no worries doing it is that its worked for me, also SuperbikeDan who does a lot of the resto's on radbmx does it all day everyday unless he's bare metalling and repowdering frames after repair, but they are mostly 831

yea we had a job brought in that was pweder coated they wanted us to strip down and respray with our polyeurothanes but when they rubbed the powder coat down it went all uneven and rubbery, so they had to take it all the way back to bare metal because otherwise it would have looked uneven and rough.

yes thats what Im talking about. where they originally powder coated? and what kind of paint did you apply after? were just specualting here that it COULD (not definate) contaminate the new coat of paint and make a right mess and we dont want that, if I can be sure that keying up the old paint and applying the 2k over the top wont have any adverse effects I will do it.

i guess so. they were originally rockshox standard silver
i used halfords rattle cans to paint them

original finish

after finish
Image

glossy and pro looking
no runs and only masked up and painted in the shed

incidently spraying in the shed means everything else goes the same colour lol

Look good from this distance, we will have a good look at mine tonite - I spoke to a guy on the phone here about this convo who talks to the poweder coaters and the reason to be a little concerned is that the powder coat is plastic based, so could be melted or cause bubbling under the 2k paint if its applied, what needs to be taken into account is that you sprayed a can, these are alot weaker and thinner then the heavy duty proper car stuff Ive done my frame in :)

I thought you only use etch on aluminium then a primer then a top coat.... You can use 2pk or single pack paints over power coat if it reacts then it isn't power coated in the first place. But it's all in the prep

no you can etch over old paint thats been rubbed down if you cant take it back to bare metal, YOu dont have to if you rub it down sometimes but you can anyway, doesnt hurt,

I didnt bother with my forks, its too much effort lol.

Gonna try get these photos up.
