Right.. after replacing the rear mech due to race damage or Essex mud

All seemed well but I have a bit of chain skip now.. not all the time but when I don't want it to be.. like up hills and applying full force...

So bike is just under a year old so about time to replace chain me thinks.. checked it on the chain wear tool I have, bit it's not over stretched.

KMC make good chains, and I've seen these here http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k398/ketten.html?
Current chain fitted is: Shimano HG-74 10-Speed

Anyone else got any good links or input on chains to use.. Oh and it's for a 10 speed.

A new chain wont help it stop skipping, it will probably make it worse!
Its either a your mech slightly out of allignment (most likely) or your cassette worn, but if its a cassette, you'll need a cassette and chain.

How would you go about re-aligning a mech then?
Is it something you could do at home?

I sometimes get a similar problem on my hardtail, and the skipping sound always makes me think something is broken...

Get the mech in the smallest gear, use the H screw on the mech to lign up in a straight line with the smallest gear. I usually use a thin screwdriver to visably see if its straight, once its lined up, then adjust your cable and it "should" be bang on!

I was playing with the barrel adjuster on my ride Saturday and this improved it. It just clicks now on moving off sometimes

Its out of alignment then.

Mine has been slipping in certain cogs towards the smaller end of the set when setting off.
might be time for a new cassette need to examine it up close

Yea mine is down near the lower cogs... dont wonna spend out again on it

It's not over bad just their and happens occasionally...

Flippin Codham park MSG race has cost me loads

Check the cassette for 'shark fin' appearence to any of the teeth. If there are any then it's worn and will need replacing along with the chain as VW mentioned. Did this on my old bike but swapped to an Sram 980 cassette and chain so that's spare now but only 9spd.
