I got some DMR V12s secondhand from pinkbike for about £15 I think, I've still got them but usually ride clipped in these days. I don't have much to compare them to, but whenever my feet came off it was usually my fault, not theirs (tried pointing your toes a bit if your feet are coming off a lot?)

Having said that though, if you can stretch a little, good pedals and shoes will serve you wonders!

Shimano do some spds for £30, currently running them and can't fault them for the money.

You need SPD compatible shoes, they should have a couple of bolt holes in the bottom of the shoe, they may be covered as a lot of shoes have them as an option.

If your feet keep slipping and you don't want to ride with spd's then you should try some 5:10 bike shoes. They have a tacky sole compound that helps stop slipping. They work very well with flat pedals like the DMR's already mentioned and are also available with spd soles. As with any pedal/shoe combination there will be a plethora of products at different price points. Shimano in my opinion will be the best option to go for for spd pedals at any price. As for shoes I would always try before you buy for the best fit. For flat pedals I like gusset slim jims but there are loads to choose from.
