Another numpty question.

Current frame takes 1 1/8 forks.
Is this set by the frame or by the headset?

Can i buy tapered forks and any kind of adapter converter or just get a new tapered headset fitted instead of the current one so that tapered forks can be used?

Hope that make sense, any help appreciated...

The head tube dictates what you can run - however you can run smaller inside bigger

ie

if you have a 1.5 head tube you can run
1.5 or tapered or 1 1/8 steerer

if you have a tapered head tube you can run
tapered or 1 1/8 steerer

if you have a 1 1/8 head tube you can run
1 1/8 steerer only

its more than likely your frame is 1 1/8 only - tapered headtubes are easy to spot as they flare out and 1.5's are massive

A lot of DH bikes run 1.5 headtubes with 1 /18 forks to offer the maximum level of adjustment with angle changing headsets

..and of course some manufactures have their own wierd setup..my Commencal has headtube sleeve, so you can use the 0, -1, or +1 headangle, I believe without the sleeve the actual dia is close to 1.5", but not quite..might measue it one day.
