Thanks for the reply, I agree a hard tail is prob best for me that specialised does look good but out of my budget as really trying to cap it at £500, evens did offer me the fuji Nevada for 330 and I would think it's upto a bit of trail riding and looks nice, but has suntour forks and it seems Rockshock etc are the way to go :/

cheers shouldgetoutmore I'll check them out ;)

I think you miss understood me? I was refering to the ebay specialized bike i showed you, the Evans link is a reference to how much that ebay bike would retail at in 2011 ie £400 on ebay (or what ever you won it at) for a bike that retails at £1000

yeah sorry mate got mixed up lol

Just seen this and thought it may help you

Best Value MTB's under £500

They seem to like the Rockrider 8.1

Ok trying to put a short list together of possible new bikes, whilst still looking out for the second handers. would like to get some thing sorted by the weekend...

Specialized Rockhopper Pro, could be very cheap if no bids, back wheel dosent match front for some reason..
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250890269965? ... 500wt_1156

Garry Fisher HIFI delux, best spec but fair way to collect and could be over budget
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180722123494? ... 500wt_1156

GT Avalanche 1 £489
http://paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b1s2p2232

GT Avalanche 2 £399
http://paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b1s2p2459

GT Avalanche 3.0 £399
http://paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b1s2p3344

Scott Aspect 20 £569
http://paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b8s2p3026

Cannondale SL4 £399
http://paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b65s2p3692

cannondale SL4 £479 (theres also a local used one on ebay)
http://paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b65s2p3693

Fuji Nevada £329 cheapest and looks pretty good
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fuj ... e-ec024668

Rockrider B-twin 8.1 £449 great spec but dont like clip in peddles
http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... 1-10-39599

For me looks wise i think its the Cannodales and Scott, price wise the cheaper i can get away with the better as also need to buy a helmet and other stuff, but on the other hand i dont want to save 80-90 quid now and regret it in a few weeks time...

Nothing on this thread in the same class as the Gary Fisher hi-fi for sale on eBay. I'd get the full spec from the seller, but you can see from the pictures. Doubt the rockrider comes with xtr kit?
Why buy a £500 bike for 500 when you can get a £1000 plus bike for the same and no need to do any upgrading.
Just my honest opinion.

That Gary Fisher does look quite nice, if everything works as it should and doesn't need replacing due to worn parts straight away. Unfortunately it's collection only from Reading! So a nice little round-trip in order.

The specialized I suggested is a 1000 quid bike new too what's wrong with that got to be worth a look and its only in Rayleigh do a search on the forums see if there is anything about them. At the end of the day you pay your money you make your choice but there is a reason some bikes are 500 quid or less and others are more

If you do go second hand it's always good to take someone with you who knows about bikes so that you're not getting screwed over. Luke at Triton cycles could do you a good deal if going for new. He deals with Trek (Gary Fisher), GT and Cannondale and is based in Loughton.

This is what I was told when I was looking and had no idea what I wanted. Admittedly I had a bit more in my budget I was told if I was to spend around the 700 to 1000 mark I will be going into the higher end of the hardtail market apart from carbon but a 1000 quid full suss will be an entry level my budget didn't stretch to what I hoped so I ended up gettin 1 for 700 and it has sun tour forks, rock shocks on a sub 500 quid bike arnt going to be top quality forks when a good set of forks will cost almost twice as much as the price of the bikes uour looking at. I wish I had waited and got a higher grade secondhand bike now as don't know anything about my bike and how it will perform

I do tend to buy used on most exspensive toys but normally I understand what I'm looking at, with montain bikes I've not got a scooby lol I'm like Ooo that red one looks ace I'll take it :/

think I'll just keep looking at the used ones and see at the end of the week, I've messaged the the guy selling the specialized on eBay to ask it's age etc so see what he comes back with...
