Well..203mm Rotors do exert consderably more stopping power than 185mm ones but whether you actually need that power (on the rear) is opoen to question, I guess you could say that a hardtail is not going to be used for extreme DH stuff and therefore you dont really need huge rotors, having said that, Ive always fitted 203mm front and rear, to be honest 90% of the time you dont need em, but when youre flying down a black run at les gets youre glad of all the stopping power you can get.

Many do fit smaller than 203mm on the rear even pro DH'ers, it will give you a benefit in weight but not much.

Check what the manufacturer says maximum rotor clearance is.

On my DH/FR frame which is HT its 180mm- and I can squeeze in 2.5 tyres.

Depends on max rotor size as recommended on forks, but I think you can pretty much put anything you want on the rear. I would say for general trail riding 180 & 160 is fine to round here and you're still going to have the big bike if you ever go to Les Gets.

I find that 203's just warp a lot and it sounds like you are being chased by a heard of geese all the time
i would only run them if i kept cooking brakes

I've got both 160 but I'm light and bike is light. 180 front and 160 rear seems pretty consistent

I've just upgraded my rotors put a 180 up front and kept the 160 size at rear, both now floating rotor type. Stops the horrible brake judder at speed now..better braking feel as well
