I'd like to go rigid Noel. I know I can lock out the fork but it's not the same. I read somewhere that a bike converted to ss is not as efficient as a specific one. Anyway, that's another possibility. Or I could convert it meanwhile?

Hilix carbon frame (Ebay shipped from Asia) for £360 (1125gr) Singletrackworld forum talk about this brand. It looks fine. They stock my size
Exotic carbon frame, £400. 1.190kg. They have Xs 15in size a big plus.

I'm thinking of going for an Ebay carbon frame and forks, then a ZTR crest wheelset and find the rest of bits here and there. I think I can do it under 10kg and £1000.

Glad your getting there on this, Wheels are a minefield too! but i think crest rims would be a good choice and i heard A2Z hubs are cheap, light and better than hope ones? but look on Superstar as they have some cracking deals on pre built wheels, but also their own custom wheel builder is pretty good.

I agree the conversion isn't ideal, but its a good starting point and will give you a good idea of what you want. Besides its cheap and easy to do.

Horizontal drop outs and proper single speed is the best way to go! You could always get a good Niner frame and fork and just transfer everything across from your other bike and get a decent single speed rear wheel? Then its easy to pick and choose your upgrades as you go.

this is my Singlespeed. I commute on it. had it for 15 years and Will never sell it as powers everywhere.



i got Orange F5 alloy forks off ebay and the complete bike built up weights about 9kg. You can ignore the colour if you want..

I use an on one doofer on the back for the singlespeed conversion and it's smooth and doesn't feel like ther's too much drag, def less than a derailleur.

You can get a secondhand GT zaskar frame on ebay for about £185. Only draw back is that it wont take discs as is. Personally my V brakes will bring me to a skidding top in a meter wiht those tyre.

Don't think you can beat it for the money.

Heard a lot of good things about the Zaskar frame. ANd yes, I agree, in black and white for me much better

I talked to the owner of a Niner SIR single speed,same guy I met previous race, while we were waiting to start the race and fell in love (not with him, with the bike!!) Not sure about chinese frames

Hi again, I'm changing plan a little bit. Forget about 29"ers. I'm going for a 26" wheel size. Just bought a new wheelset for the Boardman and I'd like to keep the previous wheels for the new one plus I could swap tyres and so.
Another thing is that the Boardman comes with a 15mm thru axle front wheel. Are there any carbon rigid forks for that? If not, I'm sure there's a way to adapt it?
