IM going to get myself a dropper seatpost, i've measured all the sizes of my original one, but was wandering about the different options available - mainly the length really. On CRC threre are a few different versions, 380mm,400 and 420mm I think. Is the measurement the overall length of the post or the maximium amount of post that can stick out of the frame?

How tall are you? Some dropper seat posts (specialized command 3 the one I've got) cant be cut down as the air cylinder is inside the post. Depends if you want to sink the post completely inside the frame I guess?

Have a look at the new Fox seatpost. Mojo have a video of it on the website or FB.

It is 5" of drop. With a top, middle, bottom positions.
But it's not cheap at about £350....

Jim - 3 measurements to consider:

- seat post diameter - most are 30.9 or 31.6mm - you need to check the seat tube on your frame is big enough - you can measure it or this measurement is usually marked on your seat post; there are a few posts coming out now in the smaller 27.2mm diameter as well

- seat post length - as you say this is the overall length of the post - no different to non-dropper posts and is determine by your frame size and geometry - again have a look at your existing post - most have the length marked on it

- the drop i.e. ho much the get will drop when you activate the post release - most are either 100mm or 125mm but you can get some up to 150mm now I think

I'd definitely recommend going with the bar mounted remote rather than the lever under the saddle approach

Also you need to decide if you want to go the hydraulic (fluid based route) - e.g. the Rockshox Reverb - or gear cable route e.g. KS i900 or i950r.

I've just ordered a Reverb and also have a KS i900r - the latter has been fine - just needs a bit of TLC every 3-4 months - 15 mins job but Karve hasn't been as fortunate and has had 2 KS posts and had to send both back - seems to be a bit of a luck involved as to when they rolled off the production line.

Earlier versions of the Reverb weren't without issues either but I'm hoping the 2012 ones with, supposedly, improved seals should be better.

Oh, if you do go the Reverb route - you need to think about which side you want to run the remote lever and whether you want to run it under or over the bar - e.g. I want to run it on the left hand side, under the bar - so have ordered a RH lever one!! If I'd wanted to run it above the bar on the LH side - I'd need a LH one.

Other makes are a little bit more ambidextrous I think

Main options / links:

Giant have just released a cheaper option - http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&q=giant+seatpost&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=12937923807057413142&sa=X&ei=Ulg9T7voA5Gg-wbyv4XmBQ&ved=0CFQQ8wIwAQ#ps-sellers

But they are just about to release a new and improved version called the Kronolog http://fotos.mtb-news.de/p/1054416

DSP http://www.dsp-racing.com/products-05-0.html and distributed in UK by http://www.locotuning.co.uk/

Rockshoc Reverb http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/a53782/reverb-125-sattelstuetze-316-x-380mm-mmx-rechts-schwarz.html?lg=en

Finally think Fox are due to bring out a post at some point 2012-13 - some details here - but looks quite pricey

Hope that helps?

Thanks Adam,

Thats pretty much all the info I was looking for in one post!

Im looking for a 31.6mm 380mm post with minimun of 125mm drop and Im swaying towards the new reverb to be honest.

Whats the advantage of a hydraulic drop over a cable?

This sounds good, like the idea of cable routing.

no worries

hydralic 'should' be less maintenance and smoother - downside is that I'm not sure how you'd go about repairing it up on a hill some where - whereas a cable one is fairly easy to sort as long as you have a spare cable in your bag

these do look good - suspect that eventually all the posts will move to a similar routing for the cable / hose - although, touch wood, I've never had a problem using a few zip ties!

I have run a Joplin for 5 years and its still going strong. After lots of use, crashes,, and mud.
Just need to keep it serviced and greased.
The remote is the one part that lets it down.

Hydraulic oil is solid under pressure with no flex or give at all, air compresses so that will be reflected under a hard hit and there air seals could leak under high pressure, hydraulic ones won't unless they're worn or rotting

Air is lighter than oil if you care ?
