Afternoon chaps :)

I believe I've identified the cause of my Recon Coil SLs 'locking up' as the fluid from the MotionControl upper leg leaking into the lower leg, thus preventing the damper from compressing and also preventing the lockout working (due to the 120ml of oil up top required for lockout making it's way into the lower) :(

So, I need to get my hands on the O-Ring, 120ml of 5wt oil & 45ml of 15wt oil.

I don't suppose any of you have any rockshox seals lying about or the small amounts of oil needed for this instance?

Cheers,

Ev

Trying to keep spend down as totally skint at the moment..

Buying kits form TF would mean £40 for full seal kits along with the oils, etc.. Just seeing if I can get just the oils and the 1 seal I need for now, to get me through until have a few quid to spend on the bike again :)

I doubt the seal is anything special, can you take the old one and get to Leigh Baxter Associates on Stock Road ind estate (01702 412750) they'll charge you about £1 for one ! dont tell them what its for just bung it on the desk and say "do you have an oil seal that size mate? " They sell oil cheap too bu not sure if they have the tiny bottles, they might well have.

Good call Jon,

I'll get my ass over there this week if I can. I'll strip them down to get the seal out.

Leigh baxters is a hydraulic supplies i use them for the lowrider suspension all the time, look to see if there is an 'o'ring and teflon back up (white split washer type looking thing) and take them both along.

OK... removed Compression Damper and Rebound Damper and yes, the lower leg was full of the oil which should have been up-top.

A 2009 instruction manual states
"Use a pick to remove the rebound damper piston o-ring and damper inner seal-head o-ring (located in the bottom of the upper tube)."
whereas a 2011 manual states
"Remove the rebound damper piston o-ring/glide ring."

I take it the Glide ring is the grey split washer thingy at the base of the damper?

And then the damper inner seal-head o-ring would be the one inside the white here?

So it's one of these (don't know what purpose the split washer has)that seals things.. Is it the o-ring that does the sealing to prevent the oil making it's way past damper shaft into lower leg?).

Arrrggghhh.. Can't get images to embed..

The circlip stops the teflon seal and the o-ring being pushed into the lowers when the oil compresses above it. Its common place now with any hydraulic seal to have a teflon backup to help protect the rubber o ring and to help the shaft (stantion) move freely and controlled in the cylinder (lower)

Ah.. So the teflon bit is indeed the split ring? (the grey bit) at the top of the Damper?

Well, Leigh Baxters were friendly but no help... It wasn't a size in one of the boxes so that's that..

Luckily another customer was listening and pointed me to P & A Hydraulics in Rochford.
Initial check was whether it was a size in one of the kit boxes.. again, no joy, as expected :(

But I was dealing with somebody who knows his trade... his next comment was, that's a standard id but non-standard cross-section. standard section would be a couple of thou larger.. PERFECT :)
I had read on forums how the original one from RockShox was if anything a little small in it's outer diameter and so, maintaining the id but increasing the section slightly to 'standard' size should help matters.

So, he's ordering me in 10 for tomorrow at about 10p each :)

Just gotta order the oils online now as these places don't do the grade I need in the low quantities. :)

Cool, i've used P&A also, odd about the cross section size, but it is used so the cross section may have squashed from original when its put in so a couple of thou larger may be just right ?

nothing a big hammer wont sort.

Well I read on one forum where a guy had bought new forks off ebay and they hydaulocked in no time at all.. When he ordered the seal kit for them, the corresponding o-ring was slightly larger in the new kit. There was talk of the forks from that time-frame (2008 - 2009) having this fault.

Hopefully the ones coming in tomorrow will do the job. I couldn't find anything visibly wrong with the one I removed form the fork, although it might just be a bit firm after a few year's use. But for 10p it's worth a punt. :)
