Well guys going with the two ring and 'stinger' upfront, from my curent triple set up.

Aiming to keep the bike as light as possible and the question is whether the bash guard is really neceesary, given any descent will mean that I am in the outer ring and therefore protecting the chainring. This will be an aggressive AM set up with ability to keep the chain on when descending bumpy lines/ small drops rather than full on big DH/FR!

Any thoughts, experiences with this approach??

The bash often helps keep the chain in line when you are hammering.
they weigh next to nothing. perhaps you could lighten up a seat post or something?

There are a bunch of 'lightweight' aluminium bash's out there they weigh virtually nothing, the lexan / plastic ones are heavier (in most cases)

I thought i'd go have a look on crc at the weights and most of them don't have them listed.
especially the ones called "light weight"

If you remember that incident where i came up "short" at woburn you will know Im a fan of bash's

Deffo get a bash or taco mate - im always sliding over stuff with the chainset - mainly around epping tbh as Northern picks routes filled with fallen trees

I'd defo have one if i was riding at epping there are loads of tree's to slide over as karve says.
