What a cock. Saw some guy there a couple of weeks ago - no helmet but wore elbow pads..?!

wow! that would surly have been game over for him if he hit his head then. It really amazes me when I see people cycling without a helmet I dont understand what they are thinking. Im not sure whats worse cycling round town without a helmet or down some trails.

Surely its personal choice ?. I generally dont wear a helmet when road riding, and there is evidence that drivers subconciously give helmetless riders a wider berth and are more careful.

As for off road, I admit I have riden Danbury helmetless but would normally go full face, as for other local rides, its about 50/50 whether I wear my Xc or nothing, although there wouldnt be any jumps/drops.

I agree it's personal choice, but I think there's a minimum level that everyone should stick to. Whether it's an XC helmet, a dirt jump one, or a full face, I do think you need something on your head. What it is comes down to personal choice, but a few people splattering bits of their skull all over the place will close trails down.

I used to ride Rom skate park with no helmet all the time, there were pictures of myself and a guy called crazy legs getting 12ft + out the performance bowl - no lids pride of place on the wall behind the desk!
When i rode in exhibitions and comps i always wore a helmet, never liked it though, not a fan of my XC one to be honest but i never go without it ?

Its easier to wear it and not need it, than to not wear it and need it.

That's the jump where I snapped my arm. As you look at it the tree on the left. Is the one I hit. I had elbow and arm pads and helmet. I just hit the jump to fast and cocked up the landing. But if some one doesn't want to wear helmet etc. If they come off bad and injure them self they have to rely on the people around them to help them out more. So would you not where a helmet and hope someone riding near by is a trained first aid guru for cracked skulls?

Im not much of a jumper and if I was going to try stuff like that I'd be padded n helmeted, but I'm too old to be pushing the limits and trying crazy stuff.

The only place where Ive worn everything is Morzine where being Knee'd and Elbow'd and Full Faced is the norm and does install confidence..especially as the speeds you can reach are far in excess of anywhere else Ive ridden.

That particular jump is a bit wierd and throws you a little unexpectedly.
a mate of mine has an indent on the chin of his full face from over shooting that very jump, whacked his lid on the bars !

there was a lad on a marin with his missus over there on saturday and thats the 2nd or 3rd time i've seen them over there with no lids.
you'd think they'd cotton on from all the power rangers bombing about?

on that jump you can just roll it. its when you pedal in things go wrong as i know. lol when done right it wont feel like you left the ground. i can't wait to get back over danbury to to ride. i'm so bored of xc riding now.

Don't worry i got the hang of it but it does kick you wierd, especially when you come in hot from the ski jump!

Totally agree with all of this, I same it on FB and know the guy, don't disagree he's just making the point because everyone will loose out if there are too many serious injuries
