It takes a 27.2mm seatpost, so not sure you can get a dropper post to fit, if that makes you feel a bit better :D

I've had a shocker with the BB as it turns out, the square taper jobby has too long an axle, so I have to buy a new BB AND the removal tool. Ah well, you live and learn!

I have some old XT square taper BB's kicking around and the tool. What length and BB size do you need?

Oooh, could be very useful! It needs to be 68mm in diameter, and I'm not sure on axle length yet. It's currently 120mm which is much too long, I'm thinking something around 107-113mm (the latter seems to be recommended, but doesn't seem that much shorter and I guess it varies depending on the cranks). Any chance that matches up with what you've got?

VW - well you learn something new every day. Consider me officially saving :D

I would think that a low profile crank with a 68 mm BB shell would be a 113 mm axle. I'm pretty sure I have at least one 113 and maybe a 107. I'll have a look later and let you know.

I have got a brand new one up for sale, see the "for sale" section for the full details. They are rare as duck and take forever to come as theres only two hydroic manufactures (a few mechanical one). Even emailed pure racing and got this sent back:

"Hello they are like hens teeth! We have a big backorder list as demand is far outstripping supply from KS. We recommend that you place a preorder with a retailer to get in the queue to reserve your post. Hi Chris I have 2 XT UN71 BB's but they are both 127.5mm. I must have sold the 113 when I sold the XT crank. I do however have an unused UN40 BB which is 113mm but with a 73 mm shell. You can have it for free, I will never use it as none of my bike have square tapers. It will probably work if you use a 2.5mm spacer which I have from an old XT hollow tech 2 external BB.

Cheers for the offer! If it's a 73mm shell though, surely it wouldn't fit my frame, which needs a 68mm BB? Or am I being a bit dense there?

Well the 78mm I have is wider but it's only the threaded collar that is different as far as I know so if you use a 2.5 mm spacer to fill the gap between collar and frame like the newer external BB's then in theory it should work. Anyone think this theory is right? As I say it's free if you want to give it a try.

It's certainly worth a go, thanks! And if it's no good for me, I'll offer it to someone else for free, keep up the good karma and all that :D

Did I also read correctly that you have the little tool jobby to pop the cranks off the BB? Any chance I could beg/borrow/throw a few quid your way for that too? Cheers :thumbup:

I have the bottom bracket tool to remove the BB and also a crank extractor you can borrow. PM me and we'll arrange how to get them to you.

So although the build is painfully close to being completed, it can only use the granny ring, which makes it fairly unusable in the real world, but that didn't stop me taking it down the road and back :D

I've now bolted on the brake callipers, connected up all the gear cables, front and rear mechs are shifting nicely (the X0 shifters are lovely!), but even in it's most 'out' position, the front mech can't move the chain out far enough. Anyway, this is how it's looking:

(apologies for the bluriness, it's dark in the garage)

Things left to do:


  1. Swap over BB for one with a shorter axle (crank extractor and BB will be on loan very kindly from Greg soon :D)
  2. Trim rear brake cable, and bleed it (that'll be another new skill to learn :lol: )
  3. Zip tie everything in place


Can't wait for it to be finished :D
