Hi guys,

Im looking to get into mountain biking (when its not windy to go kiteboarding) in the essex area. I live in brentwood but moving great dunmow way in september.

would you be able help me with the following:

1) What would be a good 2nd hand bike for £200/300? Looking at specialized - rock hoppers and hard rocks?

2) Where are good locations in essex?

Cheers

Nick

If your in brentwood then Thorndon.
For that money stick to a Hardtail, big names like spesh, giant, trek etc, Check the locals, gazette and ebay etc.

Yep, can recommend RockHopper. I bought mine 2nd hand April last year and it's great, over 1000 miles later. :)

I'm currently building a full Suss for bigger stuff like trail centres, etc. but keeping the RH as my second bike :)

Welcome to EssexHerts, Nick.

Another vote for a rockhopper, ridden all the local stuff in the south east, welsh trail centres, the peaks as well as 6 ft drops on it.
Great bikes.

How tall are you? I'm pondering selling mine to put towards a full susser, its a 2011 Rockhopper in white with red bits and 17.5 inch frame (medium). I was going to stick it up for £400 ovno as its only a year old. Close to Brentwood if you want to have a look at it.

I'm the same height as you and ride a 16". You would probably be looking at a 15-17" frame. It's better to err on the small side and play around with stem lengths and saddle position than to get something to big. If it’s too big, there is nothing you can do and you'll end up selling it pretty quickly. Top tube lengths vary from bike to bike, so it’s worth riding a few bikes to see what you like. It does also depend a bit on how long your body is in relation to your legs. 2 people of 5ft.8 can stack up differently!

You can't go far wrong with a Spesh. I reckon everyone owns one at some point!

At 5'8" the 17 (its actually 17.5) inch frame should be spot on unless you have freakish legs.
Re: spec, my bike is exactly the same as that link, the normal model Rockhopper. RRP was £695 although I got it for £595 from Evans.
