Hello all..

i managed to get out on me bike today and had a problem with the gears slipping..3x9
its in 12th/13th/14th..what i noticed is when i looked down the bottom jockey wheel and bottom part of the cage isn't in line with the chain..cage is straight,more of an angle from the 1st jockey wheel..the wheel and cage is off to the left and the wheel is slightly off square..top jockey wheel is inline..when i run through 1st to 9th its all good and in line, but 12th/13th/14th its off, but then 15th onwards its in line and square again..weird or what..any suggestions..its is 8years old,time for a new 1?..many thanks..Z

Sounds like it's either bent slightly, the bushing are worn or the gear hanger is bent. Try and get a replacement hanger first if there is no obvious bending on the derailleur as that's the cheapest thing to replace and it's always handy to have a spare. If that doesn't solve it then try retuning the gears before forking out for a replacement.

When you have the rear mech on the highest gear at the back (smallest cog) and middle cog on front. is the top jockey wheel in line then,

as from what your saying the hanger may well be bent.

I've just been through similar exercise where as my hanger was bent and the gears all snaked about on the rear cogs, also had a slightly bent rear mech cage as well.. so made the gears useless.. Suggest doing what Eccles says first as this is less of an outlay, and as you say 8 years old, so may well be a bit out of true

I would undo the cable
check the smallest cog and the jockey line up.
re-attach the cable with the shifter clicked all the way out.
then start running through the gears again.

after you have undone the cable it would be worth checking all cable outer end caps etc to ensure there are no snags

Thanks for your replies...hanger is straight and cage is straight..with it in 18th its all in line and square..when its in 1st with cable undone its all good and square..i have just tried it in 19th/20th/21st and its even worse..but from then on its ok..think eccles might be right about bushes..seems like when the cage moves forward it runs out..chainreaction here we come..ta...Z

yeah def time to retire the poor mech!

and while on the subject how old is the rest of the drive train ?

All 8 years old...2004 scott...she's getting old...do u recon i should replace the cassette as well?..ta..Z

Yes along with the chain and the front chain rings

Na,never had it serviced..just tinker meself..will do chain and cassette..the teeth r like pointy razors!!..front rings might have to wait though, crc basket getting full..ta..Z

Ok the reason i said the fronts too is they will possibly skip due to them wearing along with the chain.

Nwmlarge is right. if it dont skip it will wear all the other components like the chain really fast and you will be doing it all again in another 500 miles. also make sure you get the right hanger as there are easily 50 different shapes. unfortunately leaving a bike 8 years you will be replacing pritty much all the drive train.

If you replace the chain and not the cassette our front cogs the new chain will be junk In no time at all do it all and do it righteven if you compromise with a cheap as chips bit here and there but replace those in a month or two

Replace cheaply and your end up replacing it twice.... As its the main power delivery of the bike best to get it right
