Hey all,

Having recently acquired a dew-lite bash from NWLarge  i need to buy a couple of chain rings to restore some of the gearing, my triple set does get used all the way through but i only top out on the large ring when running down a few really big tarmac hills locally to me, when i ride Danbury or other trails i stick in the centre ring mainly unless i have to slog it up a hill.

to help me choose i need a little information to make an informed decision, is there such a thing as a 10spd chain ring ? i know there are 10spd chains but no idea why, are the links different :?:

my current chain rings are 2/32/44 rings i'm guessing changing to a 36 or even 38 middle but what about the small ring should i increase by the same ratio :?:

any other 'spec' i should look for when deciding :?:

I run a 34 front as a single and get on fine. I virtually never spin out off road and I have an 11tooth rear cog as the smallest

Yes there is such thing as a 10 speed rings most steel rings will be fine and most alloy ones will be ok. The 10speed chains are slightly narrower than 9 speed basically
for chain rings best way to look at is to go with the same ratios that shimano or sram spec on there new chainsets. so 24 inner 36 outer.

Little warning dont go with to much of a jump between the two as it will shift badly and i have had a bike in that was shifting the chain between the gap the top of the lower chainring teeth and the underside of the upper ring. it was chainmashtastic.

The whole 10spd introduction was to make smoother shifts, my bike shifts good on the deore 10spd set up i have and only takes 1 recovery shift after shifting the front mech which is good, i understand i will loose a lot of that which is why i want to choose wisely !

Have a play around with Sheldons gear calculator. http://sheldonbrown.com/gears/

With 10spd 24/36 ring setup, accounting for the crossover, there is very little you'd lose from a triple.

I'm running a 33t single run 1x9 which is fine for 90% of the riding I do in this part of the country (although I'm very much of the "if I can push it faster than I can ride it, I'll push" school!)

I personally run the 34 but if i was going to somewhere hilly with a lot of climbing i would swap it out for a 32

Shimano reckon 38 x 26 for a 10spd (and thats what they sell)

Amen to the pushing, i'm not to proud to push......

another question i'm obviously junking the Outer ring for a bash, so the middle ring will become the new outer does that mean i should buy a smaller outer which seem harder to find in the 34-38 range or just buy a new middle that would have pins and ramps on the outside and hope the bash covers them ?

No you just get a normal single ring and it will shift anyway.
do you need a bash ?
i can't really recall hitting mine on anything apart from the start gate at chicksands

Yep, any old middle ring will do. If weight is not a concern go for a steel one (cheaper deore level) rather than the alloy (XT level) ones. In a dual setup you'll be using it a lot more - the steel one will last longer.

I played with sheldons gear simulator thingy and loading up my 11-36 cassetteand 26 x 36 is pretty much spot on.

Cheers.
