I have a 2010 Rockhopper which I use mainly for commuting. For the last few months there has been a definite clicking coming from the crank area. 2 weeks ago it stopped but came back yesterday (ggggrrrrrrrrrr!)

I'm tempted to drop it into a local bike shop but fear they are gonna rip me off something cronic.

Any ideas what this could be and could I tackle it myself?

Ah the dread drivetrain mystery noise. If it's definitely the crank area then could be the bottom bracket, loose cranks, pedals that need a service, bent/knackered chainring(s) or worn chain.The only way to tell is to let someone with a bit of experience take a look. Wouldn't bother with a shop, plenty of people on here that are near you who would probably give it a once over for you. You could bring it along to the next ride you go to.

Yeah sounds good but I never take it on rides anymore. It's purely for the 20 mile commute since it's now fitted with road tyres.

I suppose I could bung it in the boot with the Cube. They could cosy up together!

Update: Turns out it was just loose crank bolts. A couple of turns with an 8mm Allen key and it's as good as new, well nearly..
