It seems when i pump out of a big down ramp I sometimes hear this rubbing, after talking to brett down at danbury who used to own one, I think as the spring squashes the back wheel is rubbing on some part of the frame.

I have no idea if theres anything I can do about it, however I did find this, which is a coilAIR so a slightly different bike with air shock where is mine is spring /w air pre load, I think the bike geometry is slightly different although swing arm looks the same as mine. If you scroll halfway down the page theres a pic of the wheel compressing right onto the frame http://forums.mtbr.com/kona/kona-coiler ... 42881.html

Now the spring im running is a 500 /2.37 which has been said by many people is far to stiff for my bodyweight (75kg) so am wondering if something else can be causing the suspension to bottom out into the frame despite that its quite difficult for me squash the shock down atm.

Might be a bit obvious, but what tyre are you running on there? it may be hitting the seat tube if it's too big.

The mtbr forum does actually say : 1. 'the Maxxis ADvantage 2.4" tires are really tall (lots of frames have clearance problems with them)'

Also check for things such as cables etc.

I just read the whole topic on that link - It seems it was a genuine design fault. Not sure if Kona ever fixed it, and even if they did, it is far out of warranty now anyway. What I would suggest is possibly getting a shorter (in terms of height) tyre and see if that makes any difference. Also, make sure you have the correct spring (unsure of hand what weight you would need).

Yes My thoughts are exactly as you say, theres little I can do, but getting a tyre with less height might work, another thing to throw on the pile of things I need... And as for the spring, Im working on that too!

How old is the spring ? they're not tempered so over time with lots of use they start to collapse and get shorter, you need to take it off and measure it uncompressed and check that length against a new one, perhaps the manuf. can give you the length it should be ?

It doesn't matter what you ride

Thanks for replies guys, yes but the bike had barely been used offroad before I bought it, the condition was immaculate, but if the spring can still squash overtime then yes as i would be confident in saying nothing has been changed on the bike since being manufactured, as said earlier the tyres are the maxxis advantage 2.4 tyres, could try a diff tyre but if you can get that spring from your mate for sat andy maybe we could try that 1st?

I've got an 07 coiler - sometimes as the suspension works the rear brake cable flexes out so I feel it on my leg and it has sometimes found it's way to the tyre. So could be that or the gear cable doing the same. I zip tie it into place on the top of the rocker arm now - just make sure you leave enough slack so there are no issues when the it all moves, don't want to rip the hose out of the calliper!

I run 2.5 minions with no issues so I don't think you need to worry about tyre size.

Could you take spring/shock off and then push frame through all its travel and see if something hits/rubs.

Surely spring strength is irrelevant as it should be able to go through all its travel without hitting/rubbing anything. (Assuming you have correct shock on there).
