My new Nomad has come with DT Swiss 350 wheels and I believe you can switch the axles from the standard QR to the DT RWS system with a 10mm bolt through.

From this

to this

Does anybody have experience with these type of axles or even making the switch.

When i asked before on pinkbike it was regarded to be a straight swap with the occasional need to lightly sand the paint on the drop outs.

when i have the cash spare to swap out my rear hub i will be doing the same swap

Yeah, rather than the stubs of your 9mm QR axle going in the drop-outs, the hub locknut's are flush with the axle end. Instead the 10mm RWS sits in the drop-out - hence the need to occasionally file the droupout to the get the extra 1mm.

Thanks chaps

Not too keen on filing a carbon drop out. also not easy to "test" if it fits first. might need a rethink

Just stick some calipers in the dropout. If its 10mm you'll be fine. Or you could always just order the 10mm rws and see if it fits and return it to CRC if it doesn't. If it does order the axle conversion after.

You could at least show us a pic of the bike with a nice NZ backdrop, otherwise how can people advise? :P

Calipers would be nice - not sure the rule on my leatherman will be accurate enough!

nothing quite like CRC - actually cheaper to get it sent from CRC!!

one pic with mountains, the sea, and an awesome carbon machine

and a couple more of my commute (and my hardtail)

I think you should ask santa cruz as it is a carbon frame

On my Kona just swapped in a 10mm bolt trhrough instead of the QR it came with, no issues at all.

Joel - I've run a DT RWS skewer on a couple of bikes with 'standard' rear drop outs (both hard ails and full sue) with no issues in terms of fit i.e. no need to get busy with a file ...

.... but I've found something like this a bit easier to use with same positive impact on rear end stiffness:

http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=32&products_id=287

Might be worth ordering one of these and checking it fits in the drop outs before ordering the hub conversion?

Cheers

Northern

Wrong, standard front axles are 9mm and rear are 10mm if you're filing something you're doing it wrong.

The trouble with conversions like this is that they're snake oil. It's the enclosed dropouts of the maxel or 15mm through axle that add the stiffness, not just wacking a fat axel in a slot. Yes you may get a fraction more contact because the axle is wider than your average qr hub axle, but any perceived extra stiffness is the placebo effect. Unless you can exchange your rear drop outs for a dedicated through axle setup don't bother.

All good stuff gents. I think my end conclusion is just to leave it as is.
